In the world of mountain biking, the word “fast” can embody different meanings. There’s the kind of fast that involves flying down technical trails with sharp turns, rock gardens, and drop-offs. Then, there’s the kind of “fast” that involves intense endurance and the ability to suffer for prolonged periods of time. Though the Niner RKT RDO features no shortage of drool-worthy features and technology, it’s a steadfast steed that’s designed and built to define the latter type of “fast.” The skeleton of this race-worthy horse is constructed from Niner’s RDO Carbon Compaction technology, which utilizes highly resilient fibers to provide front and rear triangles with an exceptional weight-to-stiffness ratio.
The RKT 9 RDO’s short-travel system is augmented by Niner’s patented CVA linkage design which permits pedal forces to operate independently of rear wheel travel. What this does is pipeline every ounce of the rider’s hard-earned energy straight to the pedals. To further ensure no pedal stroke goes to waste, the RKT 9 RDO frame mates a 73mm PF30 bottom bracket, allowing compatibility with the latest 1x cranks and more conventional multi-ring drivetrain configurations. Essentially what a PF30 does is provide a more robust platform by allowing a bigger downtube and BB shell to be worked into the frame’s design.
Knowing that modern-day XC courses constantly seek to push the limits of technicality, Niner cleverly computed the RKT 9’s geometry to be able to excel on every section of the course. They began with the 439mm chainstay length which delivers a formidable balance of acceleration, climbing traction and the ability to whittle around the technical sections. Niner also capitalizes on Boost 148mm x 12mm rear spacing. As the first Niner to feature Boost, this thing has the clearance for up to 2.4” tires, allowing for a wider spoke interface and an overall stiffer wheel and swingarm combo. This equates to a new sense of confidence to maintain line selection in the most unruly conditions. Additionally, the RKT 9 achieves the lowest standover height of any bike on the Niner roster. The low standover height means the bike can be leaned further, making tight corners and switchbacks all the more graceful.
The RKT 9 RDO 2 Star GX1 bike is built up using parts chosen from a price conscious perspective in order to make this trail-slayer more accessible and to get more riders get out on the trail. A Rockshox REBA RL Solo Air, 100mm travel fork handles the trail compliance up front with a FOX Float DPS Factory Rear Shock handling the business in the back. A SRAM GX1 1x11 speed drivetrain is responsible for getting all the power to the Niner Alloy wheels that have been wrapped in Maxxis Ikon rubber. SRAM DB5 brakes reign in that power and speed as needed. Niner components fill out the cockpit and provide an excellent pedaling platform. This build is perfect for the rider who wants an incredible riding experience but is not willing to sell a kidney to get it.
