Niner RLT 9 Steel 2 Star Apex 1 Bike

STEEL ADVENTURE SEEKER

Some things are just timeless. Like red brick is to buildings, steel is to bicycles. You may have noticed that finely constructed steel frames, crafted and welded by the best builders continue to be highly sought after for their unblemished combination of form and function. So it only made sense for Niner to re-skeleton their aluminum RLT 9 with supple, trustworthy Reynolds 853 Steel in order to breed the perfect adventuring rig. The RLT 9 Steel is a no brainer for mounting up your panniers and a sweet rack, rounding up the gang and pedaling out for a weekend of building campfires, pitching tents, and traveling the road less traveled.

Like the aluminum RLT, the RLT Steel was intentionally built for the curious and spontaneous. Its starts with the 853 tubing which excels at absorbing and smoothening out road chatter, while maintaining a carbon-like stiffness and responsiveness. If you mainly stick to the pavement or fire roads you can use 700c wheels to run road or cross tires, or if you want something a little wider (up to 1.75”) you can use a 29” wheelset thanks to the 142mm rear hub spacing. The slightly longer chainstays, slightly lower bottom bracket, and slacker head tube angle make this a real gravel grinder for the long haul.

make this a bike you can truly ride on and off road all day, the RLT 9 Steel features a gravel-tuned, custom painted Niner Carbon fork to eat up all those road and “not-road” vibrations. Connecting the dots between classic frame design and modern technology, the RLT 9 Steel is augmented with thru-axle technology and a tapered steel headtube, greatly improving the overall ride quality.

The RLT 9 Steel features uses a PF30 bottom bracket shell allowing you to run it geared or single speed with Niner’s BioCentric 30. Some of the clever, less-noticeable frame features include rear rack pannier braze-ons for when the adventure lasts longer than a few hours, and three sport-beer compatible water bottle mounts ensuring you have fuel in places that don't.

The RLT 9 Steel is exactly what you’d think of when hearing that Niner made a 700c, steel drop bar bike: beautiful, versatile and ready to seek.

A road bike for non-roadies
The RLT 9 Steel is the road bike I'd recommend for non-roadies. The steel frame, carbon fork, and disc brakes provide an excellent ride quality with very good stopping power in a variety of conditions. This bike isn't designed to win road races but you can certainly hang with your road buddies on casual rides.

The 2-star Apex build is definitely the best value of the bunch. I've been very surprised how trouble-free this groupo has been. My previous road bike was a Di2 full Ultegra build and I have no desire to upgrade the Apex.

The wheelset is not tubeless but it pairs well with the Schwalbe tires. I was surprised how smooth they rolled on pavement. Unfortunately I haven't ridden enough mile to provide offroad feedback about these tires but I noticed that dirt packs very easily between the treads.

I'm considered a "long" 6' and went with a 56cm. I was agonizing between the 59cm and 56cm sizes. After realizing how tall the 59cm standover height was, I bought the 56cm. The bike came with a 90mm stem. By switching to a 100mm stem or a Niner setback seatpost, the bike fits like a 58cm.

As usual, Jenson provided an excellent shopping experience.

Niner RLT 9 Steel 2 Star Apex 1 Bike
First of all the bike arrived very well packaged and protected in a heavy duty box. Not a scratch was found on the bike. I had to install the wheels, the seat post and the handlebars. The bike was put together fairly quickly and was ready to ride

But now the New Hampshire winter was setting in outside. I knew when I was buying the RLT that I might have to wait till the spring to really get out and see just what I got here. But at a bare minimum, with temps in the teens, I got the bike out for a quick ride around the neighborhood just to check out the shifting.

Surely the shifting can't be perfect on a bike that was just shipped to me in a box I thought. Wrong. The shifting was perfect and precise. Every gear snapped into place. This baby is all set and ready to go I thought. Now I just have to wait for a change in the weather. But I'm already looking forward to a whole new riding experience.

Awesome bike- it's the most fun I've ever had road riding!
Love it! It's been great for riding on bike paths, roads, and dirt/ gravel. Very comfortable fit- I'm 5'6" with a 30" inseam and long arms and I went with the 53. The 1x drive train works great so far, fast enough but can still climb the hills around here (unloaded).

Also Jensen did a great job on the build, packing, and timely delivery. Everything was super easy to complete and they swapped the stem at a very reasonable price. Thx

What's the maximum tire pressure for these rims? I can't find anything online and wonder if road tires can be mounted ok.
Julian13 on Dec 12, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Hello Julian,
The rims don't have a stated pressure rating, but should hold up fine as tire pressure ratings are the bigger factor. With that being said, we highly recommend giving the wide tires a try as we find that there is minimal downsides and lots of upsides to wider tires with low rolling resistance. We do lots of our road rides on our CX bikes, and tend to keep pace, and comfort and off-road ability are much improved. Keep Pedaling!
