Ibis is known in the cycling industry for the expert craftsmanship and high-grade materials that go into the manufacturing of their bicycles. To understand how it all started, take a trip back in time to 1980. Ibis founder, Scot Nicol read an article about the new “Klunker Bike” movement in the Spring issue of CoEvolution Quarterly-a friendly hippy magazine. The seed was planted. In 1981, in a workshop in Mendocino, California, the first Ibis bicycle was made. Glassy eyed onlookers saw the bicycle and asked Scot if he could produce more. Fast forward 30 years to present-day Ibis: a renowned boutique bicycle manufacturer with humble beginnings that continues to raise the bar in the mountain bike world.
The Ibis Mojo HD3 is the latest addition to the Mojo HD legacy - the goal being to create a bike that inspires confidence on hairy downhill sections without feeling too sluggish everywhere else. This almost-enduro-specific shred sled features 6” of rear suspension travel and a refined suspension platform, giving the HD3 excellent climbing prowess while remaining stable and controlled on descents. Frame and suspension redesigns have created some neat new frame features such as allowing 6” of travel using the DW-Link suspension platform, increasing frame stiffness and reducing frame weight. Other exciting features of the Ibis Mojo HD3 would include a threaded bottom bracket, versatile internal cable routing, and finally being able to store a water bottle inside your front triangle.
The Ibis Mojo HD3 uses the same carbon lay-up process as seen on the Ripley and HDR - a process that allows the carbon lay-up to be done in one piece, with no joint or seams, creating an overall lighter and stronger frame. The DW-Link was then refined to allow 6” of rear suspension travel as well as completely decoupling pedaling performance from suspension travel. This allows for the best of the both worlds - a bike nimble enough to climb like a billy goat yet capable of bombing the backside of the hill like a RedBull Rampage maniac. The Mojo HD3 features modern trail geometry, meaning it’s longer, lower, and slacker than previous HD models. Top tubes across all the sizes of the HD3 have increased 20mm compared to previous HD models, in favor of the short-stem wide-bar standard seem on other bikes of its class. Another new feature seen on the Mojo HD3 is the use of a ZS56 lower cup, which lets the headset fit completely within the frame. This allows engineers to lower the headtube which creates a larger gap between the top tube and down tube, which further increases front-end stiffness.
