As most high-end bicycle manufactures outsource product engineering, Orbea demonstrates a rare paradigm of in-house engineering. By conducting all engineering within the walls of their Basque foundation, Orbea is able to relentlessly tweak until perfection is met. Depending on who you are, where you ride, and why you ride, when it comes to seeking out your next ride the word “perfection” will embody something different from one rider to the next. A 13 pound full carbon race machine with electronic shifting is not everyone’s idea of perfection. Knowing this, Orbea pursues every model as an individual, perfecting each to be one of the best in its class. As carbon fiber is seen as the elite frame material, the more affordable aluminum models rarely receive the intensive designing and marketing attention that their featherweight counterparts do. Orbea was not about to settle for a mediocre aluminum road bike just because many others have done so.
As thoroughbred racers make up a small fraction of the road cyclists, the Avant H30D uses a hydroformed triple butted frame to blend durability, stiffness and low weight. Orbea has vigilantly selected the tubing and manipulated each tube to enhance overall strength, reduce flex, and eat up road vibration. Each tube diameter, shape, and wall thickness is intentional. The middle of the tubes are triple butted to thin the walls in areas away from the high stress of the joints and weld zones, trimming unnecessary weight while remaining sturdy. The result is a frame dedicated to those who put a value on riding for fitness and recreation versus riding for speed.
Knowing that those who ultimately choose the Avant Hydro are undoubtedly passionate cyclists who seek a more efficient position on the bike for a better riding experience, Orbea has factored in an ergonomic design for conserving energy and increasing comfort during the long haul. This by no means equates to a bike that lacks force, but one that will reduce stress on the body so that every ounce of power is devoted to the pedal stroke. Featuring a longer head tube, the Avant offers a higher hand position that also brings the handlebars in closer towards the saddle, offering a more upright body position for long lasting comfort and endurance.
The Avant H30 Disc supplies no shortage of choices for compliance. Caliper brakes or disc brakes? The choice is yours. The Avant H30 Disc is distinctive in that it’s compatible with traditional caliper rim brakes as well as disc brakes, and the ability to make the transition is effortless. The frame is designed so that the disc brake mounting hardware can be removed, destroying all evidence of any disc use. Through removable dropout chips, the rear hub spacing is compatible with both 135mm and 130mm so that nearly any wheelset can be used on the Avant. The Avant H30 Disc model includes the Shimano R517 Mechanical Disc brake system, for superior braking power and confidence in all weather conditions.
With a drivetrain dominated by the Shimano 105 5800 11 speed group, the Avant H30 Disc captures the perfect combination of value and performance. As the Shimano 105 5800 group is a mechanical system, should you ever want to make the leap to a Di2 setup, the Avant frame features an internal routing system that’s compatible with both traditional cables or the more modern, electronic wiring systems.
Orbea’s new sizing system is implemented into the Avant, putting a heavy emphasis on stack and reach, versus the much more common effective top tube measurement. Stack and reach are more truthful measurements as they define the spatial relationships of two important contact points between your body and the bike; the pedals and handlebars. Stack is the vertical distance from the center of the bottom bracket to the top of the headtube. Reach is the horizontal distance from the center of the bottom bracket to that same point at the top center of the headtube. Orbea’s logical sizing allows the Avant to accommodate a wider range of riders and aligns with a more linear size progression.
