As most high-end bicycle manufactures outsource product engineering, Orbea demonstrates a rare paradigm of in-house engineering. By conducting all engineering within the walls of their Basque foundation, Orbea is able to relentlessly tweak until perfection is met. Producing bicycles since the 1930’s and hailing from one of cycling’s most hallowed regions, Orbea is no stranger to the progression of road cycling technology and product trends. When we ponder today’s road movement, it’s clear that a popularity of “gravel” riding and racing has flowered, bringing about the demand for carbon drop-bar bikes with more overall versatility. The Avant is the all-road brainchild of Orbea’s seventy plus years of using pure passion to produce bicycles that meet the wants and needs of the modern cyclist.
As thoroughbred racers make up a small fraction of the road cyclists population, the Avant delivers a formidable blend of comfort, endurance, and versatility for those who put a value on distance over speed. Nevertheless, the Avant should never be counted out on race day. Using Orbea’s OMP carbon fiber construction, the Avant M20D frame is willing and able to fly over roads similar to Europe’s iconic cobbled sectors.
Knowing that those who ultimately choose the Avant are undoubtedly strong cyclists who seek a more efficient position on the bike for journeying long distances over varying terrain, Orbea has factored in an ergonomic design for conserving energy and increasing comfort during the long haul. This by no means equates to a bike that lacks force, but one that will reduce stress on the body so that every ounce of power is devoted to the pedal stroke. The seat stays and seat tube have been shaped specifically to enhance vertical stiffness for less repetitive stress on the body, while the higher stack, shorter reach, broader wheelbase, and longer chainstays increase stability and decrease vibration, minimizing the amount of effort put into taming the horse, and leaving more energy to gut out the late miles.
Fully aware of the plethora of varying terrain, weather conditions, and practicalities the adventurist is likely to encounter, the Avant is all about providing choices for compliance. With a drivetrain dominated by the Shimano Ultegra 6800 11 speed group, the Avant M20D captures the perfect combination of value and performance. As the Shimano Ultegra 6800 group is a mechanical system, should you ever want to make the leap to a Di2 setup, the Avant frame features an internal routing system that’s compatible with both traditional cables or the more modern, electronic wiring systems, including a hidden seatpost-mounted battery.
Venturing deeper into uncharted endurance-road bike territory, discreet fender and rack mounts allow the Avant to become its alter ego commuter/touring rig. Once the work week has concluded, the concealed mounting bosses are sure to go unnoticed at the weekend’s gran fondo. As more and more roadies are moving away from the 23c tire and fancying wider tire sizes, the Avant has the tire clearance to accommodate up to 28mm tires. The wider tire size is ideal for hard-pack dirt exploration, and also significantly increases comfort and stability during lengthy days in the saddle.
Orbea’s new sizing system is implemented into the Avant, putting a heavy emphasis on stack and reach, versus the much more common effective top tube measurement. Stack and reach are more truthful measurements as they define the spatial relationships of two important contact points between your body and the bike; the pedals and handlebars. Stack is the vertical distance from the center of the bottom bracket to the top of the headtube. Reach is the horizontal distance from the center of the bottom bracket to that same point at the top center of the headtube. Orbea’s logical sizing allows the Avant to accommodate a wider range of riders and aligns with a more linear size progression.
