POC Octal Avip Mips Helmet

POC Octal AVIP MIPS Helmet

If you follow pro road cycling, you’ve most likely seen the award winning Octal helmet being worn by one of the most renowned teams in the pro peloton; Garmin Pro. Engineered to set the benchmark in road cycling helmet safety, the POC Octal boats efficient ventilation and prolonged comfort, at a svelte weight. The EPS liner is tactically thicker in more exposed areas and is covered by the outer PC shell, while the temples and back of the head acquire more coverage to further improve safety. The monocoque unibody shell construction greatly enhances the protection properties and construction reliability of the Octal while keeping weight to a minimum.

Unlike the more common road helmets, the Octal employs a unique approach to letting air make its rounds. Instead of many small vents, the Octal has fewer, yet bigger vents for an overall larger open surface area at the front, which in combination with the optimized interior design, allows more air to flow through the helmet. To further enhance the cooling abilities and comfort, the Octal features internal Coolbest padding that helps reduce the temperatures in the interface between your head and your helmet, while the insanely light size adjustment system ensures a comfortable, yet secure fit.

POC illustrates their attention to the small details through the built-in eye garage that allows you to keep your shades securely in position when placed on the helmet; something any true roadie will appreciate. To top it all off, the distinctive, refreshingly-modern look of the Octal is like nothing your roads have seen before.

AVIP

This model of the Octal features POC’s AVIP (Attention Visibility Interaction Protection) concept which was created to raise the bar in road bike safety and performance. The AVIP concept was developed after intensive research was conducted on perception, visibility, color, contrast, communication, psychology, digital technology, and aerodynamics to better understand the specific hazards in road cycling. The Octal helmet with AVIP offers precise details, such as optimized colors, engineered physical protection, and modern technology, to grab other road users attention, keep you visible, enable communication, and provide a high rating of impact protection to maximize prevention against all of the day-to-day road hazards.

MIPS

Additionally, this model of the POC Octal road helmet is equipped with the patented MIPS system to reduce the rotational forces to the brain in the case of an oblique impact. Where most helmets are tested for vertical impacts, studies have shown that the human brain is more sensitive to oblique impacts. MIPS technology mimics nature’s own method of reducing forces transferred to the brain in the event of a crash. When subjected to an oblique impact, a membrane between the brain the skull allows the brain to slide along the inner surface of the skull, which ultimately reduces the forces transferred to the brain. MIPS helmets use a low friction layer between the shell and liner to mimic this process, which significantly reducing the forces transferred to the brain.

Ice Tag

Note: Each Octal helmet features an ICE (In Case of Emergency) Tag. The way the ICE Tag works is if an accident occurs and the rider is knocked unconscious, scanning the tag or sending a text with your unique code will allow medical personnel, or passer-byers, to identify the victim and get correct medical information such as blood group or allergies that can be vital for correct care.

Great lid, but very expensive
I got this helmet because of its safety features. I recently crashed and got a concussion, and I don't want to take any chances so I looked for the safest helmet on the market and this is what I found. This helmet has great coverage, and they integrate the MIPS system better than any other manufacturer. Other helmet companies add MIPS almost as an afterthought, and it causes pressure points inside the helmet where the MIPS system attaches to the retention system (Giro Synthe), or it alters the fit (Lazer Helium). The MIPS system is better thought out with the POC, where the fit is almost the same as the non-MIPS version. This helmet also has a huge range of adjustability, its super light, and very well ventilated. The POC decals are reflective, which is cool. The straps seem a bit flimsy, but time will tell. This would be a 5-star helmet if the price wasn't so high. That said, it would be hard to find a more comfortable, safer helmet on the market today.

PROS: Lightweight, Comfortable Fit, Good Ventilation, Highly Adjustable

CONS: Expensive

BEST USES: All-Around, Long Rides, Mountain Biking, Road Biking, Warm Weather
