The Motolite, Paul Components' flagship linear pull brake, has been around the block a time or two. Paul considers the design is so near to perfect that there is no foreseeable reason to ever change it. First introduced in 1990, Paul's brake pivot mechanism has an excellent track record. A stainless steel bushing mates the brake to the frame's brake posts and provides a larger bearing surface with a tightly controlled tolerance. The brake arms are precision ground and then CNC machined into a light weight, but more importantly strong and reliable form. A brake collar fits around each cylindrical arms and holds the Kool-Stop brake pads in place, while allowing them to be finely tuned for height and toe-in. These pivots are pre-greased for smooth action and sealed to keep them that way. Specially wound square springs offer a snappy return and are easily adjusted and balanced. The quick-release mechanism is simple but reliable, allowing you to easily open up the brake when you need to, but never rattling open on its own. The cable enters the brake through a curved noodle with a Teflon lining for reduced friction. Thanks to the switchable brake arms the cable can be routed into the brake from the left or right.
Fits standard linear pull / V-brake / cantilever bosses
I bought these brakes for my super sweet retro build. There is a VERY different process to installing these brakes and the directions could be clearer. Once I understood how the mad scientist's over at Paul decided how to set this up, I was blown away how simple it was. WAY easier than any rim brake I have ever installed and looks super clean. If you want power and performance get these brakes.
Great to have two sets now. One for Gravel’r and one for Singlespeed
Recommend if you can budget them. Little pricey however compatibility is awesome. I had a 26 and switched to 700c for a gravel’r and super stoked I am able have. One thing that can be a negative is that they are hard to set up but once figured out it’s all great.
Unfortunately I never had the pleasure to actually use this brake on a bike, because I simply couldn't get it installed correctly. I have installed caliper, cantilever and v-brakes. I have also installed the Paul touring cantis, which also weren't easy to set up because the installation instructions were lacking - it might be the same with this model. With the Paul v-brakes, I was not able to get all the different parts to hold together; something kept falling off. In the end I gave up and used another brand. I wouldn't recommend the brakes to inexperienced people. Be prepared for a lot of frustration before you get it working. Maybe the performance is worth it in the end. For me, it wasn't.
