Paul Components Shimano MTN Thumbies

Paul Components Thumbies: MTB 7/8" Clamp

Paul Thumbies are the original upright handlebar shifter mount. They easily transform bar end (aka barcon) shifters into thumb shifters. Thumbies bring back the thumb shifting of old, but this time around make shifting more precise and smoother than ever before.

Thumbies have a hinged clamp for an easy installation.

Features:

  • Sold as a pair, shifters not included
  • Material: 6061 Aluminum
  • Claimed Weight: 60g
  • Clamp Size: 22.2mm (7/8")
  • Compatible Shifters: Shimano bar-end
  • Made in the USA

Love these beauties!
I run these flipped under the bar with both shifters set in friction mode. They are well made, beautifully machined, and function flawlessly! You can't go wrong with anything from Paul Components!

Too Simple!
I got rid of my indexing shifters. I ride rough terrain and bunnyhop alot so this won't wear our the bushings because of the friction mechanism.

Just what I needed.
My singlespeed mountain bike has the kind of rear hub with a short freehub body rather than threads for a freewheel. Mostly I ride it with just the one gear, but I wanted a multi-geared drivetrain for certain circumstances (the freehub will accommodate 7 gears with 9-speed spacing). Because the handlebar clamp on the Paul Thumbie is hinged, I can install/remove the shifter/Thumbie, derailer cable/housing, derailer, and sliding-dropout-with-derailer-hanger as a single unit without even removing the handlebar grips. It's almost like a bolt-on drivetrain (except that I still have to swap the singlespeed cog for a cassette and change the chain). So the Thumbie does exactly what I want it to, in addition to, you know, holding the shifter.

Work great
These thumbies are really great. I used them to put 9sp DuraAce bar ends on my flat bar touring bike. The bike is a double ring with a 7sp DuraAce front der. that I had in the closet, and an XT 9sp rear. The shifting is fantastic. A few minor issues when going this route compared to using normal mt bike shifters. First, the bolt that comes with the thumbies does not cover the shifter end like the Shimano bolt does. You can't use the Shimano bolt because it's not long enough. It's mainly an aesthetic thing, but could also be an issue if you ride in lots of rain. Might want to think about covering up the bolt heads with tape or silicon. Second, with the shifters on top of the bar, they get a little smashed if you need to flip the bike up side down to change a tire or play with the shifting. Not a problem on the home bike stand, but I tend to do a lot of bike flipping when on a long tour. Just need to be careful and find something softer than pavement. Overall, coming from a mt bike background, I found these easy to get used to and will likely keep them on my touring bikes for the long haul.

Thumbies create a new riding expereince
I recently completed my bike build using the ergonomic Titec H-Bar and utilized the Thumbies from Paul Components. They have been a great addition and allow me to shift gears with no problems using the H-Bar.
