Comments about Portland Design Works Cosmic Headlight:
Got the cosmic a few years ago when I was in a bind for a front headlight when commuting in a new town. It does everything you'd need it to do, and well, as long as you don't plan to read the road with it.
The design is sleek and minimal. It doesn't take up much space on the bars and the one button functionality makes it easy to operate on the fly, especially compared to some lights with switches or hard-to-press buttons.
Functionally it is the perfect light for visibility while commuting. The casing is water resistant and held up to an year of commuting to school in Seattle, and being left out in the rain during classes. The quick release mechanism is easy to use and makes throwing the light in your bag a breeze. The design of the lens illuminates the sides of the light as well as the lens itself, making for good side-to-side visibility when riding down busy city streets.
The only downside to the light is it's beam output and spread. To make up for the lack of intensity, PDW focused the beam into a tight pattern, much like the spotlight mode on a modern headlamp. This light has no floodlight function and WILL NOT ILLUMINATE DEBRIS IN THE ROAD AT NIGHT. It might help you avoid hitting a cat, but dirt and small debris are still unseen.
Other than that, I have great confidence everyone can see me (also have a superflash on the rear) and I like being able to swap out the 2AA batteries easily vs waiting to charge off a USB in a pinch.
