Race Face Single Narrow/Wide Chainring

These chainrings are a game changer for single-ring drivetrains! These Race Face Single rings now feature performance-enhancing chain retention technology, allowing them (for most riders) to be used without a chainguide! The secret are alternating fat/skinny teeth to fit more closely into the narrow and wide plate spacing of a normal chain, "grabbing" the chain and holding it more securely... even without the use of a clutched derailleur!

Race Face also managed to develop a 30T front chainring for a 104 BCD. Geekery aside, this allows you to get a low enough climbing gear for pedaling an All-Mountain bike up the trail, without having to buy different cranks.

The Narrow/Wide Single Rings are strong enough to stand up to the abuse of the downhill trail, yet light enough for cross country racers. Single Rings are machined from 7075 aluminum and tested in the most punishing terrain. They’re built to last!

Race Face Single Narrow Wide Chainring Features

  • 104 BCD
  • Narrow Wide tooth profiling ensures ultimate chain retention
  • Stiff 4mm plate thickness and I-beam construction transfer loads without flexing
  • 7075-T6 aluminum, aerospace grade strength
  • Reversible laser etched graphics.
  • Compatible for 9, 10 and 11 speed.
  • 30T 104BCD NW single ring is threaded with a standard M8x0.75 chainring bolt thread, see the hardware chart for the appropriate bolt length required for your combination on Race Face's website by clicking HERE.
  • If running a 30T ring, you will need the Race Face Chainring Tab Shims (D40331) which you can purchase by clicking HERE.

One of my best upgrades ever! I went from 3x10 to 1x10. coupled with brand new 2013 Shimano XT cranks (that I won in a race), shimano XT shadow plus rear derailleur, XTR chain, 11-36T cassette and race face bash guard (I know that you don't need this one but I didn't like the look of a "naked" ring.
I get the 32T and is perfect for my type of riding/fitness level, amazingly quite and ZERO issues with chain.

1x10 Shimano XT Shadow with Wolftooth 42 cog in rear; all the dropped chains resulted in the chain getting wedged in between the lower pulley wheel and the cage on the rear derailleur until the cage broke. All you need to do is look at the narrow wide ring on a SRAM drivetrain, and then look at this "narrow wide" tooth pattern. Not even close to being the same. Don't waste your time.

easy to install on a shimano crank and you don't need any shim. it will look nicer with shim but save the weight and put some black sharpy on your crank arm

Comments about Race Face Single Narrow Wide Chainring:

Works as promised. Converted from 3x10. Replaced stock shifty 30T middle with 32T N/W. Using non-clutch XT rear derailleur, dropped two links from chain: no drops yet, no impact to rear shifting. Little more chain noise in front from greater chain to ring surface contact, but that's the point. Make sure you have a 104 bcd spider. Was 'forced' to upgrade to XT cranks because of this (no complaint there). Very pleased with this mod.

Setup is a 1x9 raceface drivetrain. I was dropping chains frequently before upgrading to the wide/narrow chainring It seems to work really well even without a clutch rear deraileur.

Comments about Race Face Single Narrow Wide Chainring:

This ring made up part of my conversion to 1x10 along with a 42t cog on my cassette. It is important to assess your terrain and fitness when selecting the size of ring to go with.

Make sure you keep your chain clean, or you'll really feel the drag due to the tight fit of the teeth into the chain.

Running a 1x10 xt drivetrain with shadow derailleur. if you ride hard, this is not the ring for you. noticed no difference between this ring and my renthal ring as far as dropping chains.....they both drop chains.

I used this chain ring to convert from 2x10 to 1x10 with the HOPE components 40t T-REX. Have ridden this combo with no chain-guides and have not had any dropped chains.

Rode recently at SnowShoe bike park through knarly rock gardens and did not have any issues with dropped chains for the week. Will continue to buy this product.

            Awesome works as advertised!

Comments about Race Face Single Narrow Wide Chainring:

I put one of these to try to tame the chain on my Blur LT. Works far better than my "bashwich" setup, costs less, weighs less than a dedicated chain guide and it's quiet.
The 30 tooth mated with 11-34 cassette gives me the gearing I need for the mountains. I'm so impressed with this product I put one on my Chameleon too.

Comments about Race Face Single Narrow Wide Chainring:

Follow-up review to original. I'm running a standard 1x9 setup using an older XT non-clutch derailleur. At first I experienced almost no chain drops, lately however, I have been getting some drops.

I assume a derailleur with clutch would help, as would a chain-guide. Not sure if the chain-ring has worn enough (15-20 rides so far) to reduce tolerance and thus chain retention or what.

Regardless, still a good enough chain-ring if a bit over-priced but I do believe you will need some sort of additional retention via guide or clutch in order to keep the chain on depending on how you ride.
