Race Face Single Narrow Wide Chainring

Race Face Single Narrow/Wide Chainring

These chainrings are a game changer for single-ring drivetrains! These Race Face Single rings now feature performance-enhancing chain retention technology, allowing them (for most riders) to be used without a chainguide! The secret are alternating fat/skinny teeth to fit more closely into the narrow and wide plate spacing of a normal chain, "grabbing" the chain and holding it more securely... even without the use of a clutched derailleur!

Race Face also managed to develop a 30T front chainring for a 104 BCD. Geekery aside, this allows you to get a low enough climbing gear for pedaling an All-Mountain bike up the trail, without having to buy different cranks.

The Narrow/Wide Single Rings are strong enough to stand up to the abuse of the downhill trail, yet light enough for cross country racers. Single Rings are machined from 7075 aluminum and tested in the most punishing terrain. They’re built to last!

Race Face Single Narrow Wide Chainring Features

  • 104 BCD
  • Narrow Wide tooth profiling ensures ultimate chain retention
  • Stiff 4mm plate thickness and I-beam construction transfer loads without flexing
  • 7075-T6 aluminum, aerospace grade strength
  • Reversible laser etched graphics.
  • Compatible for 9, 10 and 11 speed.
  • 30T 104BCD NW single ring is threaded with a standard M8x0.75 chainring bolt thread, see the hardware chart for the appropriate bolt length required for your combination on Race Face's website by clicking HERE.
  • If running a 30T ring, you will need the Race Face Chainring Tab Shims (D40331) which you can purchase by clicking HERE.

RaceFace...go get one. 1 X 10 EPIC
I've shopped around for a quality Narrow/Wide 30t and for a poor man style versus X01 or XX1. This fits the bill.
I have M-785 crankset, 26-38 setup with Shimano XT Shadow Plus RD-M786 Rear Derailleur long cage. I've always envied guys who can ride single speed and my legs aren't strong enough to take up that challenge but do like the idea of 1 X 10 set-up. So, I decided to go with RaceFace 30t. Man, this set up rocks!!! No spacer required as RaceFace recommend for 30t. Never had any chain come off but it is important to have the 'Plus' version deraileur to keep the chain taught throughout all gears. No problem using Shimano 11-36 cassette set-up. Save yourself some dough and go with this set up.

performs as good as it looks
Switched a 2x10 set-up to 1x10...this is my front chainring. With only limited rides on the setup, I dig not having a front derailleur and all the parts that go with it, haven't found that I'm missing any gears, and have yet to drop the chain.

Get this
If you run any 1 by combo. Get this ring and chain drop will be a thing of the past. I went from a bashgard and a smaller chain keeper, which worked ok. Putting this ring on, blows that combo away. It is so solid, even without a clutch derailleur. It also has a very connected chain feel very similar to a single speed setup.

Great product
Best upgrade I have ever done! This product allowed me to reduce the weight by over 1 pound by eliminating LX cranks, derailleur and shifter. I installed it without a guide or a clutch derailleur and has worked flawlessly. It's also quiet and have reduced chain slaps. Finally, it also adds bling to the bike since it is available in many colors.

Shims not needed
The product description says "If running a 30T ring, you will need the Race Face Chainring Tab Shims." which I found to not be true using an 2010 XT crankset. Maybe something has changed with the newer ones, but the chainring fits and works great w/o them. You just need single-ring bolts, or bolts with thread that goes all the way up to the cap. I'm really impressed with my chain staying on over rough stuff with no chain guide, and I haven't even got my clutched derailleur yet!

Awesome product, amazingly quite
One of my best upgrades ever! I went from 3x10 to 1x10. coupled with brand new 2013 Shimano XT cranks (that I won in a race), shimano XT shadow plus rear derailleur, XTR chain, 11-36T cassette and race face bash guard (I know that you don't need this one but I didn't like the look of a "naked" ring.
I get the 32T and is perfect for my type of riding/fitness level, amazingly quite and ZERO issues with chain.

Compatible with FSA comet?
A shopper on May 17, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Compatible with most 104 BCD cranksets. Check your crankset's bolt circle diameter to ensure proper fit.
Does this chainring comes with the bolts to install it?
eduardo s on May 14, 2017
BEST ANSWER: No. I would have liked that but I think to be price competitive they figure that you will reuse the hardware you took off. Which is doable if you add a washer the thickness of the removed chainring at each fastner. Or visit your local bike shop for the right hardware.
Is this compatible with the SRSUNTOUR Octalink Cranks?
Toyfactory7@ on Sep 28, 2016
BEST ANSWER: From what it looks like on a quick search it should work fine. The key is that the cranks have a second ring bolt spacing of 107mm. I used my old 3ring setup for a conversion and have had a solid setup. I put the raceface on the second ring spot and used a bash in place of the big ring. No front derailer and a stock chain. Only chain drop to date was my fault on a poorly timed shift. Good luck and ride on.

I have a Shimano Zee crankset, would I need to remove the crank to swap out the crainring?
TJQuick on Mar 12, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Depending on what pedals you have you might need to remove the pedal but you don't need to remove the cranks. Done this many times.
Can I use this on a 2X10?
Norbyd on Aug 14, 2017
BEST ANSWER: No. This ring is not ramped and pinned for shifting. It's made to retain the chain.
Can you run this on a 1x8?
A shopper on Jun 8, 2017
BEST ANSWER: It might not have the same retention that it does on a 10/11 speed set up , due to the 8 speed chain having a wider internal link spacing . I can say that it works great on 10/11 speed .
I have a RaceFace ride 2x crank set. Could I remove the 2 older chainrings and just replace it with this one? Wanting to do a 2x10 swap to a 1x11.
James on May 22, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Yes you can.
However, if your crankset is intended for 2x, then you'll have a problem in chain line when you freewheel. The chain will drop when you do. To solve that issue, I changed the bottom bracket spacer with a thinner one and added another spacer to the non-drive side. So, the drive side has a thin one and I moved the original spacer from the drive to the non drive side.

I made mine 1x10 (11-42 cassette) from a 3x10 tho, not 11 speed.
Would this work with my Shimano Deore cranks?
dracker a on Feb 14, 2017
BEST ANSWER: It will work if your cranks are 104 BCD.
Will this fit my FSA comet megaexo triple. want to change to a single chain ring up front.
CAP on Sep 2, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I do not know anything about your crankset, but I have converted all of my older mountain bikes to a 1 x 10 setup with this chainring up front and a clutch 10 speed derailleur in back.
All of the cranksets I have used it with have been three ring mountain bike cranksets. I have removed all of the chain rings, and installed one of these in the middle ring position. Works great with Shimano and Truvativ mountain cranksets.

I have a cannondale fsi alloy 1 and was looking to convert to a 1x11? Is this compatible?
I was also wondering if it came in a 34T.
Mike on Aug 5, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Hey Mike,
The Cannondale SI crank you have (assuming it's 26t / 36t 2x10) is a 64/104
BCD.
This Race Face ring is compatible with your crank and is also 9,10,11, and
12 speed compatible according to their website.
This chainring is available in 34t - and a variety of cool colors too.
Hope that helps.
Cheers,
Travis
I have a med cage XT, I purchased through Jenson. I really don't want to buy a clutch derailleur. Is it recommended on a 1x9?
A shopper on Apr 2, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I would buy a 9 speed clutch derailleur if one was available. Which is all the more reason to buy a narrow wide ring with a 1x9 setup.
I would buy this product, could you help me?

Will this fit my Sram XX1 crank spider?
TD on Oct 24, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Hey there,
This chain ring is 104 bcd. If your spider is 104, then it will fit. I
believe these cranks can use direct mount which means that the chain ring
you would use attaches directly to the crank arm with out the need for a
spider.

BEST ANSWER: I would not bother. I found these to be way too shallow. They look FANTASTIC, but just too shallow and not enough threads engaged to hold secure. Your money, your call.
Will this work with the SRAM X1, alloy, PF30 spindle, 30T, 94mm BCD spider that comes on the 2016 Specialized Stumpjumper FSR Elite?
Brad on Sep 6, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I don't believe so. The Race Face BCD is that same as the old 3 speed
cranks at 104mm. You could probably find a Race Face gear that replaces the
spider.
Will this chainring work with a 1/8" (Odyssey Bluebird) BMX chain? Looking to use it on a single speed 26" dirt jumper.
Eric on Apr 14, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Hey Eric great question! The Race Face chain ring is build for a multi speed chain that is much smaller than 1/8", You could use this but you may not have the best performance I would recommend a different chain, or chain ring for your set up.
