Race Face Next SL 1X Crankset

The NEXT SL crank represents the next generation of Race Face carbon cranks. Weighing in at a category leading, 500 grams, the Next SL cranks are the lightest, strongest, 100% carbon fiber MTB cranks ever produced. This is achieved through utilizing the proven Race Face proprietary hollow arm technology. Race Face has created a crank that goes beyond existing carbon material & process limitations, setting a new benchmark. Not only is the NEXT SL the lightest carbon crankset to hit the shelves, but it just may be the most versatile as well. The NEXT SL is proudly designed, tested and manufactured in Race Face’s Canadian facility, using U.S. sourced carbon and aluminum.

  • Completely hollow carbon fiber crankarms with all unnecessary material being removed from the centre core – no internal aluminum spine
  • Industry standard 30mm spline interface CNC machined from a newly commercialized aluminum super alloy that is 20% stronger than 7050 alloy (the alloy commonly used in this application)
  • Built For: XC Race/Trail/Enduro
  • BB Options: BB92, 68/73 BSA, 100mm BSA, PF30
  • Ability to fit all common frame types
  • Spiderless Direct Mount: 26, 28, 30, 32, 36, 34T
  • Chainline: 51mm
  • Claimed weight: 425g (28T w/o BB)
  • Bottom Bracket not included

These cranks feature a 30mm spindle, however will work with a standard 68/73mm bottom bracket shell width when using this bottom bracket: Click HERE

After getting the Intense T275c Pro build, I had plans to make this my dream bike build. The bike came with a very solid build of X01, Pike, Reverb Stealth and more, so there wasn't a ton of items that needed changing. This meant that I could put my money to towards items that took this bike to the next level. The Race Face Next SL cranks are that next level.
These cranks are amazing! They bring lightness, strength, durability, and compatibility to a segment of bike parts that has been pretty limiting. It used to be that if you wanted to switch up the style of drivetrain on your bike you were better off buying a new bike with better parts. Now, with their Cinch technology, Race Face has made it a bit easier and cheaper to move from 1x to 2x or 3x drivetrains. Further, with the unique spindle diameter and length, these cranks can swap from one type of bottom bracket shell to the next with minimal cost. You only have to purchase the right BB or adapters to make that work. This is a big plus since frame manufacturers have made the BB "standard" an industry joke. I don't want to have to shell out huge money on new cranks every time I change frames. Now, I don't have to. The reasons that I chose these cranks over the completion was that they brought all this compatibility, and still were significantly lighter than every other crank offering.
The only drawback I have seen to these cranks is that you must install them correctly. I have seen and heard of them coming loose after heavy rides. I have found that the common thread to these incidences is that the individual did not set the main bolt to the proper torque level. This is crucial. In every instance the person did it by "feel" and not by actual measurement. These require a lot of torque, so if you don't own a torque wrench have the shop install them for you. I also would recommend using the Race Face Crank Boots for these too.
I have blasted these cranks and ring on everything from light riding to Snow Summit Bike Park days, and stand confident on them in all riding conditions. The ring has held up to hard rock and log rolls and is as straight as ever. The price can be a bit of a hard pill to swallow, but you are getting the best of the best. If that is not what you are looking for you can get a similar crank in the Race Face Turbine without as much leaning on your wallet.
Lastly, Race Face is a great company. They are the epitome of cycling people, and I love knowing that riding their products supports a grassroots brand like theirs, and gives me the best performance. Check out my review on their Next 35 handlebars as well.

What a nightmare of an install! The locking bolt on the preload is a 2mm hex. It's a very flimsy bolt that strips easily. BEWARE!!! I could not keep the crankset tight, it loosened up and I had to walk out of three different trails. Returned. Not good for a $500 crankset.

Comments about Race Face Next SL Cinch 1X Crankset:

Very high quality and shockingly lightweight assembly. Feels like the entire crank set weighs less than just one of the Turbine arms it replaced. This is an excellent upgrade for any bike with 1X / XO1 turbine setup - it is insanely light, very stiff and I immediately felt the difference - especially on climbs.

Its expensive, but where else can you save nearly one pound for under $500 ? You can't.

NOTE: For anyone upgrading from the standard Turbine or most Shimano cranks - you will have to purchase the compatible BB with a 30mm diameter in order for this crank set to work. If you are upgrading from Turbine Cinch this is plug and play.

Also - ignore the comments about the 2mm set screw breaking - if you use common sense and don't over tighten , the cinch setup works very well to give no side lash - I wish all bike cranks had this instead of spacers, etc. Great design.

One of the best cranks if not THE best crank out there for mountain bikes at the moment.
Stiff, Light, a cinch to install and upgrade the crankset and swap out chainrings.
It was love from first pedal, and an absolute joy to spin on.

I have these cranks on my Giant Trance and they have been great. I generally run them 1x10 (with a 30t or 34T), but I am heading to a ride with a ton of climbing and going to go to a 2x set up. The only downside to these cranks are that they are so nice looking, you don't want to risk them on the trails...but, you will :)

Comments about Race Face Next SL Cinch 1X Crankset:

I installed this crank set on my carbon fiber hard tail and dropped about half a pound! The install was incredibly easy, and I didn't need any special tools to complete it. (There is a special tool used to install the chain ring, but my cranks already had that installed. The special tool is just a bottom bracket tool, a common one.) The adjustment set up they use is just like the one used on my last set of XTR cranks, very simple. Yes they use a bolt that you turn using a 2mm allen wrench to secure the locking ring. You won't have any problems with it as long as you don't over tighten it. The instructions tell you to tighten the bolt until the gap on the locking ring has closed. Stop as soon as the gap is gone and you won't ruin the bolt. The set up works just fine. I bet if you needed a replacement bolt RaceFace would send you one any way. You will need a 30mm bottom bracket for this crank set. The crank set is Beautiful, strong and stiff and I love!

Got this as a Christmas gift. It took about a month to get the install tool as it was sold out everywhere and no local shops had it. Install was a breeze. It is beautiful and crazy light. Mine came in at 8 grams under the listed weight. I have run a single 30t ring for the last two seasons. I got this for the narrow/wide tooth design with the hope that I won't drop the chain--something that happened every couple of rides with my old XTR single-ringsetup. I have yet to drop a chain after 40+ rides this season. I couldn't be happier.
