Orbea Avant M30 Disc Bike 2014

Orbea Avant M30 Disc 2014

Plan out the route. Make it long, include some dirt, some gravel, and the old beat up highway. Make it memorable and challenging. Bring good friends, coffee money, and your Orbea Avant. The Orbea Avant is an extraordinary bike with a wide range of versatility. Ride it just as it comes or customize it to your specific needs and riding style. The frame and fork are both disc and rim brake capable, offer mechanical or electronic internal cable routing, and the rear dropouts are interchangeable between 130mm and 135mm spacing.

Orbea has also gone through great lengths to pay close attention to the Avant Carbon OMP Monocoque frame and its aerodynamics. The idea was to offer great fit, comfort and do so without sacrificing performance. Orbea achieves this by basing geometry and sizing on the stack and reach of a frame, two of the most important measurements to consider for bike fit. These will determine the relationship of two vital touch points - pedals and handlebars. Internal DCR cable routing, which is mechanical or electronic capable, seals shift and brake cables from the elements and hides them from the wind. This reduces drag and ensures clean crisp shifting.

The Avant M30 Disc features an Avant Carbon OMP Monocoque Carbon disc frame with internal cable routing, electric shifting capabilities, and 135mm to 130mm convertible rear spacing. The OMP carbon fork has a full carbon tapered steer tube also with internal cable routing and is both disc and rim brake capable. The Shimano Ultegra crankset and a full Shimano Ultegra 11 speed drivetrain offer race proven performance and durability. Shimano BR-CX77 mechanical disc brakes bring superior stopping power and control. Rounding off the build is a DH13 DW wheelset, Orbea compact bar and aluminum stem, a Orbea carbon seatpost, and a Selle Italia Nekkar Flow saddle.

Excellent Looking Bike
Bike is beautiful. The Ultegra is flawless. The disc brakes are not as strong as hydros, but a step up from caliper. The internal cable is extremely nice, although there are a couple of cable rub spots you will want to put protection.

Downside to the bike: heavy.

Wheelset is 2300 grams. I replaced with DT Swiss 24 Spline for $300 and lost 1.8 pounds off the bike. I will say the OEM wheels do look bomb proof. Just heavy. I'm still holding on to the wheels for winter riding.

Saddle and handlebars are heavy. I used my own carbon bars and Specialized saddle and dropped almost a pound off the bike.

I'd give this bike 5 stars if it weren't for the wheelset. I'm looking forward to 1000's of miles on this bike.

PROS: Great value, Excellent components, Versatile, Durable

CONS: Heavy

BEST USES: Gravel, Cyclocross, Road Biking

Silky Smooth
Huge upgrade from my aluminum cross bike I was using on the road. The carbon frame absorbs the rough Indiana roads with ease. The Ultegra group shifts to perfection and the disc brakes are a nice upgrade. Fit and finish are excellent. It does come with a heavy weight tire from the factory so that will be my first and probably only upgrade.

PROS: Lightweight, Versatile, Road Smoothing, Good looks

BEST USES: Distance riding, Road Biking

Nice Bike
I am new to road biking. I'm comparing this bike against the other bikes I ride which are a Trek Fuel Ex and Surly Moonlander.
So far I have ridden the bike around 300 miles. The trips so far range from 6 to 65 miles. Overall the bike has done very well. The surfaces besides pavement, have been crush gravel and cinders. The shifting is effortless and the gearing system matches my style of riding. The bike is very smooth and comfortable on the body. The disk brakes on steep descents or in wet conditions are really nice. If you are not use to road shifters vs mtb shifters, there is small learning curve. For me the bike seems light compared to the other bikes I ride. It's easy to carry or load onto a vehicle bike rack. Prior to purchasing this bike, I did a lot of research and developed a punch list of requirements. So far this bike has met or exceeded all of those expectations. My age is 55+ I ride almost every day and I expect to ride between 2k to 3k per year on this road bike. Thats why I bought it.

PROS: Lightweight, Disk brakes, Durable

BEST USES: Smooth Gravel Trails, Dry Hard Pack Dirt, Road Biking

Well spec'ed bike with a comfortable ride!
After a decade on a Giant TCR, I was looking for a more comfortable ride. I don't race and was looking to do longer rides. The full Ultegra specs on this bike made it a good value. I bought this over the Giant Defy, Cannondale Synapse and Trek Domain because of the disc brakes. I ride in hilly terrain and like disc over rim. Worst things about the bike were cheap wire bead tires and total weight of 21.0 lbs.

PROS: Comfortable Ride, Good value

CONS: Heavy, Cheap tires

BEST USES: Road Biking, Gravel
