Rocky Mountain Bicycles humbly began in the basement of a Vancouver British Columbia bike shop, in 1981. The employees first imported bikes to sell to their customers. Later, they began manufacturing and importing frames to their exact specifications. Rocky Mountain now produces mountain bikes, road bikes, and urban bicycles. The company has come quite a ways from their modest beginning; however, their core values have never wavered. Rocky Mountain Bicycles is just as sought after now as they were in 1981.
When designing the Instinct, Rocky Mountain took what they learned from making superior cross country bikes and added in some trail mauling attitude, to design a 29er that is both efficient, yet rugged enough to make it through the trails when the terrain gets gnarly. Rocky Mountain is known within the industry for pouring tons of R&D (research and development) into their bicycle designs. Creating the Instinct was no exception. You’ll find the geometry spot on for a 29er cross country/ trail bike, due to Rocky’s new RTC 29 geometry. With RTC 29 geometry, the myth that a 29er can’t handle technical terrain ends here. The short tope tube gives the rider a more natural, 26” bike feel, with more maneuverability. The Instinct also features Ride- 9, which allows riders to customize their geometry and suspension rate to their riding style, and weight. Ride- 9 allows the rider to adjust the head angle from 67.7° to 69.3°, and the seat angle from 73.7° to 75.3°, by rotating a chip at the top of the shock mount.
The Rocky Mountain Instinct 950 is composed of FORM™ 7005 series custom hydroformed alloy, and uses Rocky Mountain’s ABC™ pivots. ABC™ Pivots are Rocky Mountain’s patent pending Angular Bushing Concept™ pivots. ABC™ pivots are lighter, more durable, and are laterally stiffer than cartridge bearings. The Tapered head tube and Press Fit bottom bracket add stiffness to the frame for maximum pedal efficiency. Internal cable routing makes for a sleek looking bike, and helps to reduce cable contaminants and snagging.
The Instinct 950 features an impressive build that is perfect for every day riding, and the casual race. Rocky Mountain chose Fox Suspension pieces due to their high quality, reliability, and light weight. The Fox 32 Float 29 CTD features 130mm of smooth air sprung suspension. The Float utilizes Fox’s new CTD technology. CTD stands for Climb, Trail, and Descend. Flip the switch to the terrain you are riding for a custom tuned feel. Fox designed CTD, so riders won’t have to deal with confusing low speed compression settings. CTD technology allows the rider to manipulate their fork multiple times during a single ride, for the best possible ride. To complete the suspension package, Rocky Mountain chose the Float CTD Custom Race Valved rear shock. SmoothLink suspension design features minimal pedal feedkback so you get a smoother pedal stroke, especially on uphill climbs. The rear pivot was placed above the rear hub axle, which keeps the average chain torque line parallel to the lower link, which eliminates pedal- bob. Together, the Fox Suspension pieces work together to create a harmonious ride. Though the suspension design and Fox Shocks pieces are amazing, there is more. SRAM X.7 MatchMaker shifters are paired with a SRAM X.7 S3 front derailleur and SRAM X.9 rear derailleur. Together these components allow you to shift through the gears quickly and without any hesitation. Avid Elixir 50 XM hydraulic brakes provide ample braking power and are fast cooling.
The Rocky Mountain Instinct 950 is an amazing package. Spot on 29er geometry, a high end component build, and expert craftsmanship set this 29er apart from its competition.

Comments about Rocky Mountain Instinct 950 Bike 2013:
Love this bike and the price. My first 29'er. Had ridden others and wasnt sure I wanted to make the switch, but this bike changed my mind. Had a small issue with the rear shock toggle switch but fox quickly repaired it under warranty. Cant go wrong with this one!
