Rocky Mountain Bicycles humbly began in the basement of a Vancouver British Columbia bike shop, in 1981. The employees first imported bikes to sell to their customers. Later, they began manufacturing and importing frames to their exact specifications. Rocky Mountain now produces mountain bikes, road bikes, and urban bicycles. The company has come quite a ways from their modest beginning; however, their core values have never wavered. Rocky Mountain Bicycles is just as sought after now as they were in 1981.
The Rocky Mountain Vertex is a race tuned 29er Cross Country bike. Rocky Mountain tested many different geometry configurations to find the best race geometry for a variety of terrains. It has been said that 29er bikes can’t handle technical terrain; Rocky Mountain feels that the Vertex can. With a tighter wheelbase of 1087mm (medium) and a chainstay length of 437mm, the vertex is able to tackle some tight and technical terrain. Along with this tight wheelbase and chainstay, Rocky Mountain has brought in the top tube lengths. Doing so effectively makes the Vertex feel more like a 26” bike. The Rocky Mountain Vertex is a hard tail 29er Cross Country bike. The lack of a rear suspension makes the Vertex handle more responsive. Rocky Mountain has crafted the Vertex with less bottom bracket drop. This decreases pedal strikes and also brings the rear wheel in more, bringing in the rear wheel in more increases maneuverability. Finally, Rocky's team riders have chosen a headtube of 70.25 degrees. After extensive experimentation with different head tube angles, the team unanimously concluded that 70.25 is a perfect balance of stability and agility.
The Rocky Mountain Vertex 930 frame is constructed from 6066 SL series custom hydroformed alloy. The frame has a zero stack tapered headtube. The advantage of a tapered headtube is superior stiffness. The Vertex 930 has a Rockshox Recon Gold 100mm 29er fork. The Rockshox Recon fork is lightweight and reliable. The Recon has a forged 6061 T-6 aluminum crown and 6000-series straight wall aluminum uppers. The lowers are constructed of durable magnesium. The Recon Gold offers reliable 100mm of travel. It is a fantastic 29er fork. The Avid Elixir 3 brakes that this Vertex comes with are great at slowing you down. Taking advantage of the 180mm front and 160mm rear rotors, this brake system is sure to stop you when needed. Avid Elixir 3, super reliable and great stopping power. In order to tackle different terrain you will need a great frame and fork in conjunction with a good drivetrain. The Shimano Deore rapid fire 10 speed shifters tie into the Shimano Deore front derailleur and the Shimano SLX rear derailleur. The shimano rapid fire shifters are smooth and allow you to shift up and down gears effortlessly. The derailleurs move the KMC X10 ten speed chain along the Shimano M552 chainrings (44/32/22T) and the Shimano HG62 (11-36T) 10 speed cassette. This Cross Country bike wouldn’t be complete without a wheel set. Shimano RM66 front and rear hubs are laced to a set of Wheeltech infernos made by SUNringlé. The tires that keep you in contact with the trail are Geax AKA 29” tires.
The Rocky Mountain Vertex 930 is a fantastic value and build. Rocky Mountain has teamed with major brands like Shimano, Rockshox and Avid to bring you a great 29” Cross Country race bike. Great materials and design has gone into crafting this bike. Race tuned geometry and a tight wheelbase make this Vertex a great race bike. Able to tackle technical terrain while maintaining a 26” feel is a great quality. The Vertex is a great choice for the avid racer or the weekend cross country cyclist.
