Here is a product that is a big improvement over the standard X9 derailleur. It shifts great and almost eliminates all of the chain slap. It still moves over the really rocky stuff when you are riding at a good clip but is much quieter and saves you chainstay. I also like the locking feature which makes it easier to remove you wheel or the quicklink in your chain. It is just a few grams heavier but well worth the trade off of improved performance.

I'm riding a hardtail 29er right now, and the type 2 derailleur definitely gets rid of chain slap (experienced on the normal x9). However, when pedaling in the low gears of the cassette, there is noticeable drag/"friction" on the chain. I'm not sure if this problem will resolve itself, but it does feel a little grittier than the normal x9.

Overall it is an improvement from the normal x9, but for the money x9 is still a great value without going to a type 2.

Comments about SRAM X.9 Type 2 10 Speed Rear Derailleur:

I put this on my bike along with a Race Face NW chainring, and removed my chain guide. All I can say is that it does what it was meant to do. I have yet to drop a chain and my drive-train is silent. The only downfall I have found is that when shifting to a larger cog can be a bit more difficult due to the clutch. I only notice it when pedaling & shifting the bike on a stand, not while actually riding the bike.

Comments about SRAM X.9 Type 2 10 Speed Rear Derailleur:

I upgraded components on my bike and decided to go with the Type2 clutch rear derailleur in combination with a narrow-wide front chainring. The difference is amazing -- no more chain-slap, no more loose/swaying chain. It's a tight, snug fitting chain throughout. It's definitely worth the upgrade!

A very noticible upgrade over previous X9 der. Shifting is better and the cam system works, no chain slap. Shifting is smooth and crisp. Very happy with it.

Comments about SRAM X.9 Type 2 10 Speed Rear Derailleur:

the type 2 is very sensitive to chain growth. IMHO the clutch is overloaded and unlike the shimano can not be adjusted, making it more difficult to shift into lower gears. the silver "stopper" already broke thru the plastic casing when the cage was pulled taught as the shock compressed. installed a new, longer chain but looks like it will happen again when the shock compresses. nice idea, just not ready for aggressive riding. should be fine on xc rides where your shock doesn't engage much.

Comments about SRAM X.9 Type 2 10 Speed Rear Derailleur:

The directions for the X-9 could have been a little more detailed. Reason why I say this, is that I am new to the clutch thing. Took it out of the box and the pulley arm would NOT budge. But after tinkering with the derailleur the pulley arm just needed a good pop release to get it to move. Sram reliable on the trails, nearly all of the chain slap is gone! Installing chains or putting in or taking out the wheel is much easier because of the clutch. All of this for a very reasonable price.

I've ridden with this about three times since I got it and the difference between it and the older X.0 it replaced were immediately apparent. One comment in regards to another review. I am running 1x10 with a 36 tooth cog in the rear and have had no problems with the short cage. I did have to add a link from my initial measurement but it was fine after that.
