Here is a product that is a big improvement over the standard X9 derailleur. It shifts great and almost eliminates all of the chain slap. It still moves over the really rocky stuff when you are riding at a good clip but is much quieter and saves you chainstay. I also like the locking feature which makes it easier to remove you wheel or the quicklink in your chain. It is just a few grams heavier but well worth the trade off of improved performance.

Overall good derailleur, but not much better than a non-type 2. The clutch is not that strong and I still get chain slap when using the smaller cogs. The stopper is a nice touch and makes maintenance easy. The one major design flaw is the routing of the cable. Because the wraps around the half-circle joint it creates friction and force on the cable. This actually causes the cable to break. Much like crimping the cable to break it. I went through three cables in about a 2 month span. Once the cable starts to create a groove in the joint it reduces the cable life dramatically. Jagwire cable kits come with a plastic sealing liner, which I'm using to reduce the friction on the cable. So far it's working. Unfortunately I can't recommend this product because of that. If you don't mind changing your cables often you may like this product.

Comments about SRAM X.9 Type 2 10 Speed Rear Derailleur:

I run a short cage on a 2x10 setup. I think the X.9 platform is the best overall balance between quality and cost, especially for the rear derailleur. Lets be honest, it is only a matter of time before you smash it off on a rock or have a stick throw the whole mess into your spokes. Do you really want $200 worth of X0 bling hanging off back there? Or worst, an X01. I cring at the price of those things.

I had an X0. It was certainly smoother shifting, lighter and all around cooler. However, X9 is less than half the cost and only marginally slower shifting. Some might disagree, but I won't be upgrading to anything beyond x9 on my Yeti SB-95 for a rear derailleur anytime soon.

However, MAKE SURE you get a type 2 variety. The ratchet goes a long way to avoid chain slap, which is annoying for a variety of reasons.

Comments about SRAM X.9 Type 2 10 Speed Rear Derailleur:

Haven't had it long enough to know about durability, but it shifts well and the best part is that it makes the ride quiet! Chain slap when riding XC is near completely eliminated.

Comments about SRAM X.9 Type 2 10 Speed Rear Derailleur:

For a lower level derailleur its held up pretty well under constant DH abuse. Shifts well enough even though its bent a bit now. Its fairly quiet when dialed in correctly. Only slight negative is I keep breaking cables, 6 over the last 70 days of riding. C'est la vie though.

Comments about SRAM X.9 Type 2 10 Speed Rear Derailleur:

It's a tale of two derailleurs. The clutch means that it doesn't always give you the gear you want right away. This is frustrating when you want to shift up or down a single gear. Shifting two gears at a time seems to override the clutch mechanism. That said, the clutch gives you great shifts when under load, which makes an obvious difference.

Only difference between this and X0 is a little bit of carbon, so you shouldn't bother with the fancier one.

Comments about SRAM X.9 Type 2 10 Speed Rear Derailleur:

Purchased this SRAM X9 Type2 10spd Short Cage for doing a 1x10 conversion to replace the SRAM X5 Long on my Trek Fuel EX5. Perfect upgrade and direct replacement. Best of all, no more chain slap! Nothing more embarrassing being the only going clank clank clank down the hill on a group ride.

Definitely recommend this (along with a 1x10 conversion) as your first upgrade.

I usually buy the X9 or below for the most vulnerable component on then bike. The X9 usually has the pass through tech from the previous years XO or XX so if you don't mind a couple of extra grams it is worth it.
