Shimano PD-M540 Pedals

Inspired by the top of the line XTR racing pedals, the M540 offers a similar sculpted body and minimalist axle design. The open body sheds mud easily and yields easy cleat entry and exit in all types of riding conditions. SPD® binding mechanisms on both sides of the pedal make entry fast and easy without the need for pedal flipping. Adjustable release tension lets you dial in the binding mechanism.

Package includes two pedals and Shimano SPD cleats.

I ride technical All Mountain and have been using these for quite a while. Adjustability a major plus. Switched from Crank Bros Candy pedals. I find the cleats on the Shimanos last so much longer than the CB cleats. You actually "save" money by buying these pedals over the CB!

I rode the Ritchie SPDs for a long time, but after 6 years wanted to get something new. These Shimanos were on sale, great price. I was biking in Colorado and Utah, and after the first ride, the grit made the pedals USELESS DEATH TRAPS. Because I couldn't unclip smoothly, I started getting sketched out by technical obstacles, which decreased my riding enjoyment. I pulled these pedals off after the second ride, and they may even end up in the trash.

Great Mtn pedals. Cheaper than XT & XTR pedals at about the same weight. Best deal for the $. Great durability.

I bought these as a back up, they've been on 2 bikes one a Santa Cruz Blur and now on my Turner Flux, everything on my bike is XOs, that's how good they are. They are just a few more grams then the XTs, with a simpler look. They can take a beating and continue giving. Excellent price when there on sale. It will be hard to justify replacing it with a XT or XTR when they get such a bad beating!

I have only owned Shimano pedals since I have never had a reason to try anything else. I have been on 3 rides so far. These pedals are great. My past 3 sets of pedals were a the lower model than these, decided to give these a try since they are lighter and a great price. No regrets.

Clipping in and out with consistent confidence is what you will get with these pedals. A bit on the heavy side compared to some race pedals but an excellent bang for your buck entry level pedal that function beautifully.

Comments about Shimano PD-M540 Clipless Pedal:

After years of riding with Crankbrothers I am back to SPD. The CB pedals (Candy, Mallet) are still better when it gets muddy but I have taken a few too many tumbles when I couldn't unclip.
These Shimano M540 pedals are easier to clip in and out and today when I fell over I noticed both feet had come out. Nice! The M540s are OK in mud (not quite as good as CB) but I'll take a small mud tradeoff for safety with these M540s.

I bought these after my shimano 520's (?). The previous pedals lasted a long time but the. The loose ball bearings died they were cooked. Prices and technology have made anything with sealed bearings pretty affordable. I try to stay away from anything with plastic or loose ball bearings. These have a powerful spring and a secure lock. The float is adjustable but seems very strong at first.

I've always ridden Shimano clipless pedals and always have been super pleased with the performance. For the price, I don't think you can do much better than these pedals. I love ability to adjust the tension as well as the different cleat options Shimano offers with the multi-release or regular cleats. These pedals are solid. I've banged them on rocks and they still feel like new. Awesome pedals at a nice price!
