Xpedo Spry Pedals

Weighing in at a meager 260 grams per set, the Xpedo Spry pedal is a super sleek low-profile pedal that keeps things grippy on the gnarliest of terrain. The magnesium cast body measures only 11mm thick and allows plenty of clearance for trail obstacles. The large platform area is studded with 14 replaceable pins that provide superior grip performance, maximizing pedaling performance and inspiring confidence.

Independent Review:

The Xpedo Spry pedal is a great platform pedal that doesn’t cut any corners to achieve it’s unbelievably low weight. Over the past few months we’ve been testing these pedals, we’ve found ourselves constantly reaching for them because the shallow platform has helped us minimize pedal strikes on the new crop of 27.5″ bikes, that have very low bottom brackets. If you’re in the market for platform pedals, this is one option you can’t afford to overlook. -Bike Rumor

I typically ride clipless, but picked these up after a friend recommend I try flats every so often because of some leg pain. These pedals are light, every bit as solid as the Xpedo MF4's that I've been running for about a year, and they came with extra pins in case I tear some up or wear them out. I'm using some 5.10 shoes with these, and while it's not quite like being clipped in, I haven't got any new scars on my shins. If these pedals hold up half as well as the MF4's I have, then the price/durability/weight combination should make these the most popular flats on the market. Also, they are very thin, which helps with clearance and strikes.

I bought these simply because I was blown away by their weight.
Unfortunately, they could be made of Helium, and they still won't do the primary job platforms are supposed to do, which is keep your feet on the pedals.
Mine arrived yesterday, so I mounted them up and rode with 'em today for the first time.
Mind you, I'm 240lbs, and I wear 5-10's,so I have a heckuva lot of weight forcing my feet into the pedals, and extremely soft soles on my shoes.
Initially I found that I liked their smaller platform, as it made for a smaller area for rock strikes.
Also initially, my feet seemed to stay planted.
I came upon some steep railroad-tie stairs that are part of this particular loop, and about 3/4 the way down, my left foot really started migrating off the pedal. There's not a lot you can do in this situation, so I just hoped for the best and it worked out.
A little while later I went off a decent-sized jump, and upon taking off in the air, my right foot flew off the pedal, which obviously caused the weight on the left pedal to rotate the left crank DOWN, so I landed with that pedal lightly touching the ground, which in turn slid my foot almost all the way off the front. My buddy had a GoPro running that happened to video it, and I had literally an INCH of my heel still attached the pedal.
At that point I decided that these pedals don't have enough traction for this type of riding, and since I used clipless pedals for more mellow mountain-biking, I had no use for 'em.
Because I bought 'em from Jenson, of course the return/exchange(turned 'em in for some Blackspires) went uber-smoothly, and I was out the door with my new pedals lickity-split.

          Comments about Xpedo Spry Pedals:

These are light, thin and wide but the pins really hold the pedals back. All you have to do to fix the grip is take a flat metal file and file the top of each pin flush with the surface so the edge around the top of the pin gets sharp. Takes 3-4 passes with a flat file. The pins come shipped with a soft edge around the top so they just don't bite into your shoes very well. Takes about 10 minutes to file the tops of all the pins to make the edges sharp again and they will stay sharp and grippy for a LONG time.

Excellent pedals for urban, casual and light trail riding. I have it on my converted Klein Quantum roadie now in use as a casual bike. I plan to put it on my kids' bikes up to a 26" mounty. As some posters have experienced, these pedals will not cut it for heavy trail or enduro use. Otherwise, these are really good plats.

Been using these with freeriders for about 100 miles and they just dont stick to my feet. I love the fact that they are crazy thin and super light but during aggressive rising its really hit or miss if your feet will still be on the pedals. I think sharper/pointier pins could really help these out. Xpedo has a set of twin tip pins ill try before my deity compounds go back on

                  Comments about Xpedo Spry Pedals:

I got these and tried them on one ride. It was a little muddy that day, but nothing crazy. I had on my running shoes that are basically flat on the bottom, so should work well with the pins (or so I thought). The whole ride was like a slip n slide and by the end of about 45 minutes, I was done and my knees were starting to hurt.

I have a feeling dedicated shoes are the way to go, but I like the freedom to wear what I want. Too bad, I guess it's just not my style of pedal - not the fault of the product in any way. Construction seems excellent and it's certainly light and very nice to look at.

                        Comments about Xpedo Spry Pedals:

Granted, I ride pretty hard, but these pedals are not made to withstand the abuse from an avid mountain biker. There are two issues with this pedal.

                        1) The pins are threaded into the body of the pedal. This means that after a rock strike, the threads have a good chance of stripping. New pins can no longer replace old pins - they won't stay in. You'll need a new pedal body.

                        2) The magnesium body is relatively fragile. After about 6 months of riding, the pedal cracked in half.

If you smack rocks, I recommend Diety Compound pedals which have lasted for several years under the same amount of abuse. The pins are threaded into nuts, instead of the body of the pedal, so you can easily replace the nuts/pins, no matter how damaged they are (you can even drill them out if they get stuck). The plastic body is also extremely durable and will not break/crack like the magnesium body on the Spry pedal.

If you're a casual rider and don't ever smack rocks with your pedals, then these would work fine. I wish I could make them work, as the weight is great, but they just aren't made for true mountain biking.
