Continental Mountain King II 27.5 Protection Tire

The Mountain King II is now in its second reign, strengthening its rule over the trail bike scene. The shoulder lugs have been beefed up, creating more space between the center and side lugs to shed mud for better grip, especially when flying into a turn. The Mountain King II provides plenty of traction for various terrains from muddy to loose over hard packed, and can be run on the front, rear, or both. This version of the Mountain King II features Continental’s ProTection-RTR casing which increases sidewall protection while also providing a UST compatible Revolution Tubeless Ready bead. The Mountain King II has once again claimed its throne as a serious all-condition tire!

This version of the Mountain King II features Continental's famous Black Chili compound. Black Chili compound hit the market in 2007, and has been a hit with cyclists ever since, as it has proven to take tire performance to the next level, in all areas. The BlackChili compound lasts longer, grips better, and rolls faster. It has 26% less rolling resistance, 30% higher grip, and even 5% longer mileage. The Black Chili Compound is only made in Korbach Germany, and the recipe is not shared with any other tire manufacturer.

The Revolution Tubeless Ready system provides the perfect combination of smooth running, grip, and puncture protection. ProTection RTR features 4 ply heavy duty nylon (4 under tread, 3 in the sidewall.) The Revolution Tubeless Ready (RTR) system offers a UST style bead, and mid-weight casing for full tubeless compatibility. For optimal results, Continental recommends using the Continental RevoSealant with these tires.

Note: If Stan's was previously used, both the tire and rim must be scrubbed using Simple Green or a similar cleaner, before Continental Revo Sealant can be used.

I love this tire but using Stans with it takes patience! I am running this tire on both the front and back wheels but I found dozens of pinhead holes in the sidewalls that took days (font tire) and weeks (back tire) for Stans to completely seal. I had to dismount the wheels when not using the bike and lay them flat on the floor (flipping them over every so often) for days to get them to seal. What's the deal with a premium tire maker who makes a tire with holes in the sidewalls it sucks and when I went on conti's website to complain that portion of their website does not work! But the bottom line is I love this tire so much I simply put up with the initial Stans hassle so I can run this confidence inspiring 2.4, very fast rolling tire with the famous Black Chili rubber. Yeah its a love hate relationship but she's made for me!

Contrary to other's posts, I had no issues getting these mounted and seated. I've got a couple hundred miles on them so far and they are holding up well in the tread department and I really like the rounded profile. They are confidence inspiring in corners and stick really well. If you ride on asphalt or concrete at all to get to the trails, the tread pattern causes a bit of vibration and noise.

However my single big complaint, despite using a good bit of Stans, they continue to leak air between rides. I've seem some suggestions that the sidewalls are a bit porous and suggested mounting them with Stans and leaving them on their sides for a couple days to completely seal them. I've not done that that but when I have a couple days between rides, I plan to. Completely airing up the tires every 2 days is getting old.

Other than that one complaint, if I can figure out a way to fix the 'air quality' issues, I would buy these again. Not sure if I'd recommend them to a friend yet.

Slightly new look from older set I had before and the feel is even better. Control in cornering and in climbs only increases ones confidence that this tire will hang wherever you take it.

Comments about Continental Mountain King II 27.5 Tire:

I currently have 2.2 knobby nicks and this 2.2 tire is more like a 2.1 or 2.0. Definitely sizes small. Should have got the Mountain King 2.4 because it would probably fit like a 2.2.

Also, it is incredibly difficult to install tubeless. I have both tubeless rims, stans fluid, and even with a compressor it just wouldn't seat properly.

I'm hoping they last longer than the knobby nicks did.

    Hopefully it lasts longer

Comments about Continental Mountain King II 27.5 Tire:

I absolutely love these tires but it took about 3 weeks for Stams to completely fill the dozens of tiny pinholes in the sidewalls. I had to leave the rims off the bike and on their side when not riding to finally get a complete seal. Even with the tubeless hassle the tires roll extremely fast and give me a ton of confidence when the single track gets scary! For me this is a much better tire then the Nobby Nic I had been running.

Great all around tire. Only negative so far is that I needed a compressor to install. This is with WTB i23 wheels. Previous Nobby Nic and High Roller II mounted up with floor pump no problem.

Can a tubeless tire be used on a clincher rim?

              A:

              Ken,

Yes, when installed with inner tubes, a tubeless tire can be installed on a clincher rim in the same way a traditional clincher tire is installed.

If, however, you wish to set a tire up tubeless, it is recommended that both your rim and tire be designed for tubeless use.
