I've ridden on these tires for about 4 months, and am very satisfied. Although they are certainly not as fast as less-knobbed tires (think maxxis, continental), they climb extremely well, and feel especially secure on loose dirt and gravel, as well as wet conditions. The protruding knobs seem to hold up well to the small bit of road riding I have to do to get to my local trails. Feels GREAT on sketchy, steep, rutted trails - they will increase your confidence. Would recommend.

Comments about WTB Velociraptor Comp Wire Bead 26" Tire:

I ride mostly in the hills surrounding the SF Bay area. Since I have only had the tires for a few weeks and it's the middle of Fall with no rain of consequence yet, the ground is still super dry and hard, or occasional deep dust pockets, normal for this area at this time of year. The tires have performed very well so far, great traction on climbs, stable on the downhill even in loose gravel. Swervy in dust pockets though, pretty much the same as all other tires I have ridden before. Apparently nothing can handle several inches deep of sand or dust without fishtailing all over the place. That's ok, I don't expect miracles from any tire in deep dust, the physics for good traction just isn't there.

But the mud will be coming soon and it remains to be seen how they handle that. No tire that I've tried so far has done very well in the mud because it's mostly very sticky clay and usually builds up rapidly like a snowball rolling down hill until it jams around the brake pads (V type) and forks and locks the tires up cold. I have to carry a putty knife in the winter and have had to dig and scrape my way free every few minutes in some really bad places.

The reason I'm so concerned about mud is because the Velociraptors are doing something unusual that I haven't seen in any tire before. The knobs are so big that the canyons between them are frequently picking up rocks and chucking them hard into my chain, chainring and derailleurs. The sound of it isn't pretty and I'm sure it's not doing the bike components any good. If they grab onto rocks so well, I'm concerned that they might be even worse than all the others about mud accumulation.

These replaced a well-worn set of Nanoraptors, and I loved those. They had a high central bead that made them look like a bad choice for mountain trails, but they were the best handling tires I have ever had, particularly in about 1/2 inch loose gravel. That's about the size the Velociraptors latch onto, but the Nanoraptors never chucked a single rock that I can remember. The only trouble with the Nanoraptors was that one of them developed a separation in the innermost layer, and since the weave is at an angle relative to the tire, it formed a big lopsided bubble following the line of the weave. It quickly grew to the point where it was rubbing on the brake pads and fork, but fortunately I was able to finish that last ride on them before it exploded. I even had to let some air out to get the bubble down small enough to get by.

Then I replace the Nanoraptors temporarily with a very very old set of Piranha Pros while I shopped around looking for a good deal on some new tires. The Piranha Pros had been sitting on the wall in the garage for such a long time that the rubber had begun to decompose. I didn't realize it at first, but numerous knobs started to break off on each ride. So I quickly replaced them with the Velociraptors before they crumbled completely and exploded.

You're probably wondering about now, why didn't I just buy another set of Nanoraptors then? Because the price on them has skyrocketed. I bought the Nanoraptors in 2009 for just $7.99 each from Performance in a super on-line sale. Your read me right, just 16 bucks for 2 new tires, and the best I have ever ridden. Performance doesn't sell them anymore, and everyone else who does wants about $35 to $40 apiece for them. Insane considering what I paid for them just 4 years ago. So based on good reviews and a much better price, I decided to try the Velociraptors instead.

So all things considered, the Velociraptors are orders of magnitude better what I was risking my life on before, at least in the condition that the old tires were in. I would give them a 5 star except for the annoying rock chucking, and that's why I reduced it to 4.

Tire is very good for the price and eats up climbs. Wish it came in a wider size however as it seems to be just that little bit too thin for my taste.
I didnt have to much trust in my cornering before i got these, now im all about it. Get these tires.

Comments about WTB Velociraptor Comp Wire Bead 26" Tire:

I installed this tire easily on my commuter/trail bike, no tire levers needed..
This tire has performed well in mixed conditions and still works well on pavement. I have the WTB paired with a Kenda Kenetics 2.3 front tire and the combination has worked out great for my style of riding and use.

Comments about WTB Velociraptor Comp Wire Bead 26" Tire:

I have been using these tires for years if not a decade. They are the best. I have tried others but when the conditions go from sand to mud, dry to rain, up to down I have never had a problem with these tires. I have had a few that allowed puncture flats and I have had one wreck the destroyed a side wall. But for as many miles that I have riden on these tires, I can surely praise their ability.

these tires feel like an upgrade to the stock tires that came with my Scott. I ride trails with tons of roots, sand and corners - these tires have been awesome so far they climb anything and do not slip even when it is a little damp out. I do not notice the weight at all, but can feel the stick when I dive into corners...Great tires that work and look good too!!
