These shoes are fantastic. The really tight weave over the toes makes these shoes very water resistant when riding in wet/muddy conditions. They won't prevent water from coming in if you step in a puddle but will repel splashes/rain/mud while riding through it. I rode a 60k enduro in what was the rain storm of the year and my socks were still dry. There are some reviews of them being too hot in warm weather, well, i don't think they are. One thing I know for sure is that my socks are always dry at the end of a ride, which makes for much more enjoyable riding, especially during the wet rainy season. The shoes do feel very roomy in the toe box, which is how they were designed. They'll allow for thicker socks for cooler weather, so, if your feet are on the narrow side, you might need a 1/2 size smaller

In other words, you are not even getting something for giving up the ventilation.

Comments about Shimano SH-XC50 SPD Shoes:

Good shoulder season or generally cool and rainy conditions shoes. Quite roomy for the size which I appreciate in the toe box and regret a little on the heel side. I had to move the ratchet strap to the tighter position and still have to crank it up almost to its limit to have the shoes tight just enough. My feet are quite narrow though.

Comments about Shimano SH-XC50 SPD Shoes:

I retired my ancient Sidi Dominator and more recent two strap Sidi Blaze, recently tried on some Sidi shoes here in town.the Shimano XC-50N fit and perform just as well.Very pleased with this purchase, the velcro and strap design allows me to perfectly adjust the fit.I anticipate the buckles will be more durable.I thought the replacement cost of the sidi buckles was unacceptable. The lack of ventilation on this shoe should not be much of an issue here in Idaho,we have so few blazing hot days. The shoe is a perfect match for the thick Shimano SPD cleat, not so even with a new Sidi shoe as the cleat protruded out past the sole tread. The recent morning temperatures are in the low 40s here,no need for thick wool socks with this shoe, luxuriously warm.

Comments about Shimano SH-XC50 SPD Shoes:

It's been a cold and brutal spring so far and my shoe cover was starting to show signs of wear so I decided to try these for cold weather riding. They seem to keep my toes warm in 40 degree weather. Only glitch is that the shoe has predrilled holes for toe spikes, but the shoes don't come with them. I use these for road riding, but if you're getting these for cyclecross, make sure you order the spikes separately.

My other pair of shoes is also a shimano so I can't comment on sizing if you're coming from a different brand, but the toe box is on the roomier side.

Comments about Shimano SH-XC50 SPD Shoes:

Since I live in the Pacific NW, these are good 3 season shoe. I have the Shimano waterproof, insulated boots for my winter riding. I have only ridden twice with these shoe, since it is Winter, but the shoes performed as well as I expected. It's a good shoe, I like the ratcheting enclosure and the sole is stiff, for good power transfer. Over all it's a good shoe for the money.

Comments about Shimano SH-XC50 SPD Shoes:

These are great shoes for someone looking to consolidate and have one 'all around' shoe for commuting, mountain, cyclocross, and some road riding. They arent as stiff as some carbon road or even mountain shoes, but more than stiff enough that I have ridden a road century in them without hotspots. They are also easy to walk around in because they flex a little at the toe. I have the regular XC-50 with the mesh vents and they are VERY comfy in all but cold wet weather. the XC-50N should pick up nicely where they leave off. The one downside to these is the narrow heel tread...any slippery or off camber surfaces can cause you to roll over on your ankle if you arent careful.
