Pros:

This is a great breakaway fender. It provides oodles of wheel coverage for people who may not have mounting lugs for a fender, but don't want to get soaked. The rear of the fender is made with a high-durometer rubber that allows some flexibility if you hit something or whack yourself with the back of it. I have personally ridden with it through heavy driving rain, and it does make a big difference. Not as much as full touring fenders, but something is better than nothing.

Cons:

As mentioned, the fender lacks low wheel coverage. Though this is inline with its purpose and function (that is, not getting a locked wheel from jammed debris) it does mean that your feet will get wet, if not soaked. Wear booties if you need to have dry feet. Due to where it mounts, the fender does have one other quirk: it sheds mud and water directly over the lower leg bridge, which then drips down to the seals.

Bottom Line:

Small gripes notwithstanding, this is a fine product, and meets all of its claims. Comparing it to a set of full coverage fenders, though is like comparing apples and oranges. This is a product meant to keep the rider (mostly) dry, not the bike.

I bought this for my full suspension mountain bike as I was using it to commute to work on.

While the hardware that mounts under the fork crown seemed reliable I had an occasion where the fender fell out after a few months. Had it not lodged between my wheel and fork blade I could have totally missed that it had fallen off and lost it.
***to fix this I drilled 2 small holes on each side and ran zip ties through the fender and around the top of the fork. This has proven to be a very durable solution and also stabalizes the fender minimizing any movement on its bracket. The drawback is that I lost the quick release function but that is not an issue as I have a roof mounted rack and for those times I needed to remove the fender I just cut the zip ties and replaced them later.

The gap between the underside of the fender and the top of the wheel is huge allowing rain water picked up by the tire to be thrown foward by the rotation of the wheel and then blow back over the fender on to me. I understand that there is not much that can be done to prevent this as I am using a full suspension bike as a commuter which is probably not the ideal selection for this task...its what I have though.

At slower speeds and trail use the above issue is not really a problem and the fender provides effective protection via a durable product that will not easily brake if tweaked, leaned against, or the bike is crashed.

It would be great if SKS could make pre-drilled holes for zipties should folks want to add them for added security.

Overall I am happy with this product.

Put this on my wife's commuter bike after she lost her previous fender. Has a secure mounting bracket and the fender is easy to put on and off as needed. Fender provides good protection from the front wheel spray.

    Comments about SKS Shockblade Fender:

10 years and counting. Keep finding out new things about the genius of its design. Works great. Durable yet extremely light weight. Factor in low cost ( a little more expensive than when I bought mine but...) with nice looks and it cannot be beat. I also use SKS' rear fender in tandem.

I highly recommend this product. I ride 8 miles off road in the Northwest, rain, wet, roots, mud 5 - 6 days each week. It seems to block everything, seems impossible but it works great and costs next to nothing1

    Comments about SKS Shockblade Fender:

I won't be buying another one of these to replace the one I lost. Being able to take it off quick for dry trail riding is nice, but I really would prefer to invest a few extra minutes unbolting a more functional fender that stays put and doesn't soak my feet.

    Comments about SKS Shockblade Fender:

I have tried many cheaper fenders and they were junk. I would buy this fender again. It has a quick release but I find I run the fender all the time. There is aways a mud puddle somewhere along my rides.

The fender provides good coverage but can't recommend a product that falls off. At $27 a pop not recommended. I will try other designs even if they cost more in hopes that they stay on....
