Jamis Dragon 29 Sport Mountain Bike 2012

Dragons are portrayed as fire breathing mythical creatures in countless fairytales. This is your opportunity to harness one. The Jamis Dragon was crafted from Reynolds 520 pipes, which takes the edge off of the ride without emptying your wallet. The Jamis Dragon is the mountain bike that built Jamis’ high- end reputation in their early years; the legend is still going strong. If you’re ready to convert to a set of big wheels, the Dragon 29 Sport is a great option.

The Jamis Dragon 29 Sport is outfitted with Manitou’s Tower air sprung fork, which offers TPC Absolute Plus damping for maximum pedaling efficiency and Reverse Arch lowers for optimal torsional stiffness to weight and enhanced steering precision. The SRAM 3x9 setup provides 27 gears to manage the variable terrain. SRAM X.7 front and rear derailleurs communicate with the SRAM X.7 shifters for fast, reliable, and accurate shifting. Avid Elixir 1 hydraulic brakes are strong and provide reliable braking power. The Ritchey cockpit is both functional, aesthetically pleasing, and is cost effective. Hence Jamis was able to put their resources into the high quality drivetrain components.

Throw a leg over the Dragon and enjoy the ride. The Dragon 29 Sport has the ideal 29” cross country geometry. With a 72 degree head angle and 73 degree (size 19”) seat angle, you’ll be in the perfect position for climbing the hills, yet be slack enough to enjoy zipping back down those hills! Weighing just 31 lbs, you’ll be able to enjoy a steel frame bike in a lightweight package.

Comments about Jamis Bicycles Jamis Dragon 29 Sport Mountain Bike 2012:

I am a daily commuter (8-20 miles) and off road single track rider on the weekends. This bike does them both with ease. The massive 29er tires cut through single track gravel, dry conditions and through woody sections with nasty roots. For commuting, put a fender (or two) on right away because these tires eject water. The bike frame with tires makes pedaling a breeze.

*Negative was the SRAM cransket had a stripped out right pedal hole, so I had to get a new crankset.

SUPER BONUS: Jenson customer service is amazing and they sent me a slightly upgraded crank within the week. Much appreciated!!

Comments about Jamis Bicycles Jamis Dragon 29 Sport Mountain Bike 2012:

I wanted a moderately priced steel hardtail and with few options I settled upon the Jamis Sport. Really a great deal in terms of what you get for the price. The X7 shifters/derailleur work quite well--shifting is very reliable and precise. The Elixir brakes haven't gotten the best reviews online, but I have zero complaints. They arrived setup correctly with no bleeding required and stop well. I have not had to do anything with them and they have performed admirably of the course of the last few weeks through typical XC riding. The Manitou fork is competent, although it does not have the alloy steer tube as specified--it is steel. It is still a good fork for the price, though a bit too plush at times. Took a while to get the setup just right in terms of ideal air pressure and dampening. But once dialed in, it's not bad at all and should be reliable since it's a coil-based fork. The wheels arrived perfectly true and have held up fine. In playing with the tire pressure I ran them too low and bottomed out on the rims a few times. The rims held up nonetheless with no damage and have remained reasonably true.

My only complaint is the overall weight. Steel frame + mid-tier component spec and basic wheels mean this thing is porky. I've replaced a few bits like the tires, saddle and pedals with components I had on hand to drop the weight, but its still heavy. If you're a weight weenie you likely have more expensive taste than the Dragon Comp and should look elsewhere. But to be fair this is a sub $1k bike, so its to be expected. Overall, a great value and fun to ride. The weight is not too noticeable unless your doing a lot of fast accelerations out of short/steep climbs. This bike thrives in situations where the effort is more steady and sustained.

Didn't know if I would like the 29in wheels, but after riding it I would never go back to a 26. A bit on the heavy side, but does feel light on the trails.
