Comments about Vuelta Corsa Pro 700C Wheelset:

These wheels are attractive looking, but ultimately fail to live up to reliability. The hubs are actually rebranded Novatec (model 192/172) hubs, but I'm not sure who makes the rims. There are several other brands of these wheels around (such as Garda).

When I first got these wheels the spoke tension was fairly consistent, but there was a slight vertical runout of true on both wheels (low spot). It is however, not noticeable when riding, although they shouldn't have come with them.

The other issue out-of-the-box is the freehub would occasionally "slip" every 20-30 miles since Day 1, but has improved to a state of almost being gone. I assume the problem is that the freehub comes packed with too much grease, which causes the paws to stick. Unfortunately the freehub is a sealed unit so it's impossible to open it up and clean it. After time it improved (presumably as grease thinned out) and maybe slips every 100 miles or so to this day.

After about 750 miles on the wheels they got their first trueing (which should be done on any new wheels after a few hundred miles on them to let them 'settle'). Only a few minor tweaks and they were true again.

At around 1,000 miles the front wheel broke a spoke. It broke right at the elbow. It either could have been caused from the spoke being twisted from the wheel building/trueing process, and/or just cheap grade spokes. Maybe a combination of them all. Installed a new spoke and wheel was back to being true with no major effort.

After 2,500 miles the hubs start feeling a bit gritty. Time for new bearings. Fortunately you can find decent high-grade bearings for under $20.

To date I've probably put around 3,500 miles on these wheels in 10 months.

So the ultimate question: Are they "worth it"? I don't think so. At this price point they're not the lightest or strong wheelset you can buy, nor proven most reliable.

If you are looking for a high-mileage training wheelset, I'd look at maybe a wheelset with proven and known reliable Shimano hubs, and maybe 3x spoke pattern. If you want this wheelset just for occasional riding, it may be for you.

Nice looking rim. Love that there hand built have nice bearings in the hubs rolls for long time. Rim dose flex and had a defect on my front wheel. Jenson did take care of it. Great tech support.

Comments about Vuelta Corsa Pro 700C Wheelset:

I bought these since my previous bike had Vueltas and they were great. However, it is a year since I put them on and I have now broken three spokes on the rear wheel in as many weeks. I'm a big guy, at around 220 pounds, and I guess the spokes just can't take it anymore. This morning one snapped as I was starting up at a green light! I think wheels should last longer than 4,000 miles. There is nothing here or on Vuelta's site to indicate that heavy riders shouldn't ride the Corsa Pro's. Consider this your warning.

      • Upgrade

Comments about Vuelta Corsa Pro 700C Wheelset:

Replaced a set of Rolf Prima Apex wheels on my old-school 853 Reynolds Schwinn Circuit. The Corsa Pros are not as laterally stiff, but they seem to stay true and feel really, really fast...faster than the Rolfs they replaced.

Best use, I think, is as an upgrade for a recreational rider looking for a swoopy wheelset.
