As one of Germany's top bicycle brands, Focus has built a strong reputation for designing high performance bicycles. Whether it is Road, Cyclocross, Cross Country, or All Mountain, Focus is a leader in innovation and design, offering outstanding bicycles with an incredible price-to-performance ratio.
The Black Forest is a hardtail XC 29er line with a focus on performance. This lightweight bike finds its foundation on sturdy alloy frame construction, yielding high performance results. Meticulously designed and constructed, the Black Forest doesn't skip a beat on the trail and keeps you cranking mile after mile.
Complementing the Black Forest frame is a trail ready group from SRAM and Rock Shox that is durable and performance driven. Together they produce a compelling ride experience that complements the precision of the Black Forest frame. Sram X0 10 speed twist shifters set the pace with spot on and reliable shifting while the Sram X9 front and X0 rear derailleurs keep the chain in check, smoothly guiding it to your desired gearing. The lightweight and stiff Sram S1000 cranks transfer power with every pedal stroke and Magura MT2 brakes give the the power to stop on a dime. A Rock Shox Reba RL fork with remote lockout provides 100mm of travel to tame the bumps and those more challenging sections of the trail. A Focus branded Concept cockpit, rounds out the Black Forest 1.0 build, making for a truly dialed and comfortable ride.

Comments about Focus Black Forest 1.0 29" Bike 2013:
The short of it: The component package convinced me it was a good deal. It was not.
The long of it: I was advised to look elsewhere by a very knowledgeable LBS owner. His feeling that the geometry is outdated. He was right.
I purchased the bike for my 5'3" GF, who is a competitive triathlete, and figured the high end SRAM comps and Reba fork would make the purchase worth the while. She is new to mtn biking and I didn't expect outdated geometry would keep her from getting started. I was wrong.
As stand over is not specified in the geometry specs, I am confident, although not certain, that I discussed with Jenson USA sales the issue of stand over height relative to the riders height & inseam prior to making the purchase. Assured the small size frame would fit her small size body, I made the purchase.
We rode together 2 times before it became apparent that the Focus geometry was not going to work for her. It simply did not fit. The top tube was so high on the small size frame as to make riding extremely difficult, if not dangerous, especially for someone new to the sport.
Accepting that I had more than a little responsibility in the purchase decision, I consulted with Jenson hoping we could come to some mutually agreeable solution and quickly get her on a bike that fit.
Upon hearing the story and that the bike had only been ridden 2 times, the Jenson sales person I spoke with seemed confident we could return the bike even though we were about 37 days past the 60 day return period. I told Jenson the frame had some cosmetic damage and offered to send pictures.
Upon receipt of the pictures the story changed. They would not take the bike back.
Wanting & needing to get the situation resolved, I suggested they sell me a Niner EMD XS frame. I would swap out all the comps from the Focus to the Niner and need only a seat tube and headset. The Niner geometry is right, I ride a Jet 9, and I consulted directly with Niner about the swap out, it seemed like the best solution to the problem and it was.
The deal is done. I purchased the EMD frame, stripped the Focus, built the Niner and we rode this past weekend while attending the UCI WC in Windham, NY.
Bottom Line: My complaint is that Jenson, while speaking of accommodation, was acting only marginally so. The accommodation that started as a return with refund or credit ended as a meager 10% discount on the EMD frame and a free headset top. I feel they should have done better, and now seeing the Focus Black Forest discounted an additional $200 beyond the price I paid, I've got of bit of a stinging feeling in my back side.

I just started riding and was borrowing a buddy's bike that was too small for me. The guys I ride with ride $10k bikes which I could not do and had no interest in as I am just starting out. After researching extensively and trying to find a reasonably priced bike with components I could use to try and chase these guys down I decided on this focus. Great decision!! There is nothing else out there remotely close to this price range with these components. I love the XO speed shifters and after about a dozen rides of me beating on the thing so far it's holding up great. I strongly recommend this bike. My only gripe with it is that compared to the Superfly I was close to getting the geometry on this frame seems a little more dated. Also, I plan on swapping out the horrible seat that it came with but that seems pretty standard on most bikes under the $3k range. Great deal!!
