I was getting tired of my chain derailing in the same rock garden. I run two front chainrings and did not want to spend a lot of money on a chain guide. I thought I would give this a try. Wow it really worked well and was very afordable. The Black Spire tensioner was very easy to install as well. It also made the shifting a lot faster front and rear. I am very happy with the product.

Installed on my 2010 GT Sanction 2x9. Went on fine but I had to use two BB spacers to keep the chain from rubbing on it which in turn made a more dramatic angle on my chain so I bought and replaced one spacer with a thinner spacer. Once that issue was bettered I found that to adjust tension other than the wheel adjustment you have to remove the crank every time, which could have easily been eliminated by supplying screws that have the hex screw on the other end just like the one on the wheel. DUH! Finally because of the design of the groove in the wheel which moves the chain over, if you back peddle more that half a turn the chain climbs to the big ring and jams. Making it an inch or so longer may solve that issue since it would move it away from the chain ring and less of a chance that the chain would move over. So it was totally useless on my bike, sending it back.

Comments about Blackspire Stinger Chain Tensioner:

I bought this for my XC bike, an iron horse warrior 5.0 hardtail. I got the BB mount. I used this in combination with a front derailleur to help guide the chain. It was easy to install if you know how to take apart a set of cranks and remove a bottom bracket. You need special tools to do that though. Make sure you tighten the bottom bracket enough to hold the chain tensioner in place.

Comments about Blackspire Stinger Chain Tensioner:

I bought this after I converted to 1x, and started having trouble with chain retention (no clutched derailers for 9-speed...argh!!!). On my third ride with this installed, the wheel fell off. Also, on the three rides using it, I lost my chain more frequently than w/o it (might be an adjustment issue).

Called Jenson & they are sending a replacement same day...awesome customer service!

Comments about Blackspire Stinger Chain Tensioner:

I really like this chain guide because it fits on anything with an external BB. I use it on my aluminum GT and it has eliminated all chain noise. Just smooth, quiet bombing the hills. It is made of hefty metal, i think its steel, which is nice for durability but is heavy for a part that isnt really in danger of really getting beat on.

Comments about Blackspire Stinger Chain Tensioner:

It seems like it does the job, is simple and probably offers less drag than some designs, but the roller has a bit of a wobble, which doesn't seem to affect the function at all, but is still a little disappointing.

Comments about Blackspire Stinger Chain Tensioner:

I bought this after I took the big ring off of my Trail bike and had some trouble with chain slap and derailing. It turns out this is NOT directly compatible with a Race Face crank. It was designed to bolt on with shimano. I took it to a shop with a great mech and he said it took some "figuring out" and it wasn't a great fit. The tensioner does it's job, and does it well. Just make sure it's gonna fit your setup before you buy!

Nice looking but roller is lousy, having a bearing on one side only. The roller is sloppy on the shoulder bolt. I used the roller from my damaged Gamut unit which has bearings on both sides and is much better.

We have this on a Santa Cruz Bronson and a Santa Cruz Tallboy LT both 2 x 10 now. Works well so far. On some bikes the chain might rub slightly when your in the small chainring in front and big cog in rear. Once it is bolted in place I had to push it in about an 1/8". I pushed on the roller with my hand toward the chain stay just barely to get about a 1/16" clearance from the chain to the bracket. Use blue thread locker on the bolts, if they are not already coated, and you should be good to go.

Comments about Blackspire Stinger Chain Tensioner:

Have this mounted on a Rocky Mountain Altitude 50 RSL with a Race Face bash guard. There was not room for the inner chain ring unless the BB spacer was positioned between the Stinger and the bearing cup. I suppose that's OK, but it makes the BB spacing 75.5mm and requires adjusting the Front Derailleur. But for that little oddity, the thing went on without a hitch. It is clever in its simplicity of operation; the chain simply climbs to the larger roller shoulder when you shift to the small ring and drops to the smaller one when you up-shift. It's not a case of never dropping a chain, but it happens a lot less often. Probably worth the weight increase if your trails deliver a beating like mine do.
