Comments about Shimano Alivio M430 Crankset:

This has been my go-to crank for mountain and road touring. The 26-36-48 is perfect gearing for touring the flats and mountains of California. The 22-32-42 gearing is the common gearing for mountain biking, which is available. After 6 years of using this crank, it has proven itself with my intense training, touring, and commuting. Unfortunately the 8 speed is being phased out in favor of the 9 speed. Also the square taper UN55 bottom bracket interface (another strong dependable part) is going to the octolink.

Comments about Shimano Alivio M430 Crankset:

Finally a touring or recreational gearing crank. This 26-36-48 is the perfect gearing for almost every recreational cyclist. The race gearing we have been forced to buy with 42-52's are ridiculous for anyone other than a racer.

Strong and dependable construction, has not failed in the 5 years I have been using Alivio cranks.

Too bad the 8 speed square taper is now obsolete. We are now forced to buy 9 speed with Octolink bottom bracket.

Comments about Shimano Alivio M430 Crankset:

Building up a touring bike and desired a low-cost crankset in the 48-38-28 size which is getting harder to find. Nice quality for the price and works well with the suggested BB. Left side crank sticks out a little farther than I'd like and Alivio MTB front derailleur does work as it is spaced to far out to align with the 28 chainring. Have ordered a Sora 3x9 front derailleur hoping it will work.

Comments about Shimano Alivio M430 Crankset:

There are few choices for square tapered bottom brackets without breaking the bank that will allow for 32T-38T rings. I wanted to convert my bike to a single speed (without replacing BB and all), and these fit the bill. I did notice that when I removed all the chainrings, one of the small chainring bolts where jammed and forced in place from factory stripping the crank's threading. This will affect me if I wanted to go back to triple chainring configuration, but since I am going single speed, I could care less.

They look tough and are good entry level components which allows you to change chainrings when worn.

Comments about Shimano Alivio M430 Crankset:

Good product, but weight would be an issue if these weren't only for a commute bike. Replacing old LX aluminum cranks and the Alivio are noticeably heavier. I might try and remove the outer chain guard to reduce weight - it seems this can come off with just a few phillips head screws.

Had a bit of fun installing when I didn't remove a plastic shipping clip on the smaller chainring and wondered why the spindle appeared to be too short :-)
