Giro Prolight SLX Shoe 2012

The Prolight SLX redefines fit, feel and power-to-weight performance in a lightweight shoe. Starting with a select Teijin microfiber upper that shapes to your foot like a second skin, Giro then added an ultralight EVA footbed plus a SuperNatural Fit Kit footbed with adjustable arch support so you can customize the fit to match your needs. At only 6.5mm thick, the high-modulus Easton® EC90 SLX outsole is exceptionally thin and light yet provides best-in-class stiffness for maximum power transfer. Titanium hardware reduces weight even further. If you’re looking for the lightest pro-level shoe without compromise, this is it.

Giro Prolight SLX Shoe Features

  • Teijin AG100 ultra-light microfober upper
  • 3 strap closure
  • Offset "D-rings" made of titanium to reduce pressure points and reduce weight
  • Easton EC90 SLX high-modulus carbon sole
  • Ultra-light EPP footbed with X-Static anti-microbial fiber
  • Approximate weight 205 grams
  • Works with road 3 bolt cleats(Look style)

As the name suggests, these things are light! It's a nice minimal design and the velcro-only lends to this feel.

My first impression is that they feel like slippers. The upper feels slightly on the flexible side to me. I don't know if this is a pro or a con, but it feels like some energy could be lost here. I would imagine a shoe of this calibre might be slightly stiffer in the upper, as are other high-end road shoes that I've owned.

The velcro works great and holds your foot very securely and you can make micro-adjustments well with it. I have a wider foot and the flexible upper and easy adjustability helps my foot to be comfortable throughout long rides.

The insoles seems to be well thought out and come with three replaceable arch supports depending on your foot. My only complaint is that the insoles are made of a material that allows the foot to slide around, especially with thin, synthetic cycling socks. Many other shoes have the same type of insole so maybe it's just me. They seem to hold your foot ok, but I've replaced them with some from another shoe that has a more rubbery, no-slide feel to them.

All in all, I'm liking these shoes.

As one commenter posted previously, the straps are WAY too short. I do not have big/fat feet at all, and the top strap doesn't even have 0.5" of contact. Because the contact area of the velcro is so short, I am not sure if it will be secure. I am not sure if these will eventually stretch or not, but I am leaning towards sending them back. For the record, I bought 2 pairs (2 different sizes) and they both have short straps.

Comments about Giro Prolight SLX Shoes 2012:

I'm a 210 pound pedal masher and these shoes are plenty stiff. Quality is obviously high and for me buckles have always been pretty useless - Velcro or laces are a better solution. I really like the look of these shoes also. The weight is as-advertised - these things are light. Get the right size - these are as far as I can tell 100% true to size down to the millimeter - so if your foot is 29cm don't get a 28cm shoe. Width and volume, however, are pretty adjustable.

These are super light and super stiff, they look nice and they fit folks that don't have superwide feet. They come with a variety of arch supports so you can fine tune the fit. Best shoes I've owned by a long shot and now a killer deal.

Comments about Giro Prolight SLX Shoes 2012:

Upgraded to these from an entry level pair of Lake shoes. Super light! With the sale price I wouldn't hesitate to buy another pair. They cost almost as much as entry level shoes, and these are top notch. Some reviews noted short velcro straps, I can see this as they are much shorter than my previous pair of shoes; however they work great for me with an average width foot.

Comments about Giro Prolight SLX Shoes 2012:

I've worn several high-end shoes (Pearl Izumi PRO Leader, Sidi Genius 5 and even the Giro Factor) and none even came close to the fit and stiffness of this shoe. Size 47 with Keo cleats came to 510 grams -- these things are light as a feather. The supernatural fit system that comes with the shoe is excellent, and allows for three different arch levels. The high arch does it for me, and results in an insole that feels custom made. The uppers are a bit stiff at first, but have since conformed to my feet and feel almost like a slipper. The Easton carbon sole is extremely thin (I had to lower my saddle height 5mm to accommodate) and extremely stiff. The entire system results in a shoe that translates, quite simply, into an excellent platform to transfer power. Finally, you should serve hard time for what these cost -- $120 for a $360 road shoe of this caliber is highway robbery. I'm so impressed that I might buy 2 extra pair -- these shoes are that good, and easily the best cycling money I've ever spent.

These were my first pair of road bike shoes and I am extremely satisfied with the purchase.

Shoes feel a bit snug (I would get a half size up) but the Velcro straps make it easy to adjust the width.

I'd get another pair tomorrow it I had to.

Comments about Giro Prolight SLX Shoes 2012:

So I ordered these shoes and just received them but here is my view on them. I tried the shoe on immediately, I usually wear a 10.5 US, and ordered the 44.5 size. The size honestly felt perfect, and although I haven't done any riding with them, they do feel very comfortable, even on my midwide foot. Another thing, the shoes look and feel like quality footwear, and definitely look sturdy. They are very light, as you would expect. The last note is that the previous reviews are all right in saying that the straps are indeed too short, well mainly the top ones. Although this is easily remedied. Anyway this shoe is pretty impressive.

Very light weight as advertised. Love the air vents in soles near toes, helps keep feet/toes noticeably cooler. Noticeable difference in foot comfort after my rides. I expected them to fit smaller than they do. Input from Jenson rep ensured a good fit. Overall, great shoes, can not find any negatives.
