The Mallet 1 might be "entry level" but dont let the low price fool you. This pedal is ready for aggressive use. Its combination platform/clipless design gives you the flexibility to be clipped in when you want and the extra support of a big platform when you dont. Crank Bros has totally re-designed their pedal lineup for 2011 and the Mallet 1 gets many of the same enhancemnents as its higher-end brothers.

best use: for DH
You get your shoes very easy in.
On a track with a lot of rocks and roots, your foot get out too easy from the pedal.

Comments about CrankBrothers Crank Brothers Mallet 1 Pedals:

As long as you have your clipless shoes on hand these pedals are perfect, plenty of platform to feel secure in the cockpit no matter what, and easy clipout when needed. Riding with regular shoes however was a bit more difficult the higher end versions have pins in the platform and might be better for non-clip riding but these were just slippery to me.

Comments about CrankBrothers Crank Brothers Mallet 1 Pedals:

These pedals seem good until you use them. I was undecided between going with flats or clipless when rebuilding my Marin East Peak so I figured this would be a good compromise. I still have not bought clips so I've been using them with my trail running shoes which have worked fine so far on other bikes.

Pro Tip: If going without clipping in, make sure your shoe has DEEP grips on the bottom. The pedal does not grip much so you have to compensate.

This can lead to some slipping even when riding in good conditions. If you ride in muddy conditions (like I like to do) then forget it. You will slips off them all the time.

My score is based on using unclipped shoes, and may change when I used them clipped in.

Comments about CrankBrothers Crank Brothers Mallet 1 Pedals:

this is a great intro mtb clipless pedals. big platform so you can ride not being clipped in for those technical sections. but the platforms do get in the way of trying to clip in. hopefully, it'll get better and a little on the pricey side, but they are crank bros.
