Giro Prolight SLX Shoe 2012

The Prolight SLX redefines fit, feel and power-to-weight performance in a lightweight shoe. Starting with a select Teijin microfiber upper that shapes to your foot like a second skin, Giro then added an ultralight EVA footbed plus a SuperNatural Fit Kit footbed with adjustable arch support so you can customize the fit to match your needs. At only 6.5mm thick, the high-modulus EastonĀ® EC90 SLX outsole is exceptionally thin and light yet provides best-in-class stiffness for maximum power transfer. Titanium hardware reduces weight even further. If you’re looking for the lightest pro-level shoe without compromise, this is it.

Giro Prolight SLX Shoe Features

  • Teijin AG100 ultra-light microfober upper
  • 3 strap closure
  • Offset "D-rings" made of titanium to reduce pressure points and reduce weight
  • Easton EC90 SLX high-modulus carbon sole
  • Ultra-light EPP footbed with X-Static anti-microbial fiber
  • Approximate weight 205 grams
  • Works with road 3 bolt cleats(Look style)

As the name suggests, these things are light! It's a nice minimal design and the velcro-only lends to this feel.

My first impression is that they feel like slippers. The upper feels slightly on the flexible side to me. I don't know if this is a pro or a con, but it feels like some energy could be lost here. I would imagine a shoe of this calibre might be slightly stiffer in the upper, as are other high-end road shoes that I've owned.

The velcro works great and holds your foot very securely and you can make micro-adjustments well with it. I have a wider foot and the flexible upper and easy adjustability helps my foot to be comfortable throughout long rides.

The insoles seems to be well thought out and come with three replaceable arch supports depending on your foot. My only complaint is that the insoles are made of a material that allows the foot to slide around, especially with thin, synthetic cycling socks. Many other shoes have the same type of insole so maybe it's just me. They seem to hold your foot ok, but I've replaced them with some from another shoe that has a more rubbery, no-slide feel to them.

All in all, I'm liking these shoes.

As one commenter posted previously, the straps are WAY too short. I do not have big/fat feet at all, and the top strap doesn't even have 0.5" of contact. Because the contact area of the velcro is so short, I am not sure if it will be secure. I am not sure if these will eventually stretch or not, but I am leaning towards sending them back. For the record, I bought 2 pairs (2 different sizes) and they both have short straps.

Very light weight as advertised. Love the air vents in soles near toes, helps keep feet/toes noticeably cooler. Noticeable difference in foot comfort after my rides. I expected them to fit smaller than they do. Input from Jenson rep ensured a good fit. Overall, great shoes, can not find any negatives.

Comments about Giro Prolight SLX Shoes 2012:

Love the shoes ! As light as advertised. From the first ride I could tell the difference in both weight, comfort and keeping my feet cool. Not sure why other reviews mentioned short straps, they seem perfect to me. My previous shoes were Sidi with only 2 straps and like how the 3 straps on Giro keep my feet in place better with no stress point discomfort. Do admit that on first ride there was some discomfort in my feet, but due to experimenting with inserts. On my old shoes my feet would hurt after the ride, on these Giro Prolight after 2 rides of 30 miles each I have no after ride discomfort. Got a great deal through Jensonusa and the tech head gave me great pre-sale input to ensure proper fit. Highly recommend Giro Prolight and JensonUSA.

Comments about Giro Prolight SLX Shoes 2012:

Let me start off by saying that I love giro shoes. I had the Apeckx from Jenson a year ago and they fit me perfectly. There were no flaws in that shoe. With all the miles I put on them and the journeys, it was hard to part ways with those shoes. When the time came I went and looked at these right away. They're much lighter, easier to get aero shoe covers on and off, and all the arch options these have is simply amazing! Jenson had a great price on these over memorial day weekend so I jumped on them as quick as I could. They breath well, look great (love the highlighter coloring), and have been extremely comfortable. LOVE THESE BOOTS!!!

Comments about Giro Prolight SLX Shoes 2012:

Jenson's price on these is just insane.

These shoes are top quality and only have a single flaw: the top strap doesn't allow for much adjustment. With my low-volume, flat feet, I'm basically at the tightest this strap will allow. It works fine for me, though, and they fit great. However, I can imagine that anyone with high-volume feet might have trouble pulling the strap through enough because it is so short.

Other than that, these shoes are stiff, light, comfortable, and fit the same as every other Giro shoe. I think the last is the same as their MTB shoes as well. If you currently own a pair of Giro shoes and the size works for you, order the same size here with confidence.

Thanks to Jenson for the steal!

Comments about Giro Prolight SLX Shoes 2012:

I have very small feet and knew size 40 was too long with the Trans model. Got a 39 first and it was too tight plus the top strap was at the limit.
Got a 39.5 and feel perfect.
I don't consider my self with a high instep, but the top strap is still a bit short, 1/2 inch longer will have been perfet. I will probably do a small modification to the shoes.
The Easton EC90 SLX sole matchs other Easton component on my bike, just a cool factor.

Also, as a Canadian, first time dealing wiht JensonUSA, and the shipping took 2 days, wow!

Major sale at Jenson USA. No surprise there. Mathematics as follows: $350 shoes for $140. Hmmm....okay then! WOW! just buy them. Get at least a half size bigger. If ya take a 42, get a 42.5. Giro isn't terribly generous in the toebox, but not necessarily cramped either. Unbelievably light weight; under 200g per shoe. All straps, no ratchets! I am pleased with my purchase. I have not owned shoes of this caliber.

Just be careful with the sizes. I had to return the first pair because it was very small for me. It will be great if Jenson USA include the sizes in CM in the sizes chart. Giro has very small sizes for the number. I usually use 9.5 US and this number is always around 27.5 CM. The pair I returned was 10 US (43.5 EURO) and it was 27 CM !!! Returned those and ordered a 44.5 EURO. It fitted just perfect.
Before ordering, google "giro shoe size chart".
