Definite upgrade from and did BB7's! Great power great modulation. Super easy to bleed and install. They tend to fade a little under constant heavy loads. They still do theyre job though. If you're in the market (on a budget) for a great hydraulic brake system these are for you! Best bang for your buck for sure!

Very good performance per dollar ratio! Stops my 29er hardtail with confidence when using 180 front and 160 rear rotors. Was surprised at how good the lever feel is, very easy to modulate. Install was simple. Jury is still out on durability but I have faith!

Comments about Shimano Deore BR-M596 Disc Brake:

I bought these to replace the Avid Elixir 1's I had on my 29er hardtail. I am so glad I did. So far just installed the front brake, will do the rear brake shortly but didn't want to have front and rear brakes brand new on the bike as I am currently using my bike as a commuter and wanted to make sure they were nice and broken in first.

I used to have a set of 1st generation XT discs and these brakes are very similar in feel. I think Shimano makes the best feeling brake levers on the market. The stopping power is great, it didn't take long to get the pads nice and bedded in. I did a few hard stops down an hill and some extended braking and voila they were nice and grabby. Levers have a solid feel and not mushy.

I haven't had to bleed these yet but they seem like they are quite easy to bleed from what I can see in the video tutorial and it uses mineral oil which is much better than DOT in my opinion. The Avids I previously used were mushy feeling and a pain to bleed.

I would suggest picking up a set of these if you are interested in upgrading your discs. It is the entry level Shimano but I can't see how the SLX that I have on my other bike is that much better, it does have the reach adjustment knob but other than that and maybe some lighter weight I can't justify spending more just for SLX.

Comments about Shimano Deore BR-M596 Disc Brake:

I bought these originally to replace the Hayes Stroker Trail set (which was problematic) on my wife's Kona; was so impressed by them that I bought another set to replace the Elixer 9s on my Santa Cruz. At half the price of the Elixier 9 set, these brakes work much better, less noisy, easy to bleed. Easy lever squeeze allows 1-finger braking. I'm very happy with the less expensive Shimanos

Comments about Shimano Deore BR-M596 Disc Brake:

Decided to replace Avid Elixr 5's with Deore disc brakes after 2 rides, and so glad I did. Avid brakes are complete junk! Deore brakes are easy to set up, and now no more squealing or fade. I paired mine with 203mm front and 180mm rear XT IceTech rotors. Kit included a new olive and barb to trim the hoses to length. I didn't have to cut the rear hose for a 29er, but even though these were "Pre-bled" there were some air bubbles in the line that required bleeding. Don't forget that these require the Shimano funnel tool for easy bleeding, which you'll have to get separately.

Comments about Shimano Deore BR-M596 Disc Brake:

I recently picked these up for a build I was doing because they were a great price and I've always had good luck with Shimano hydraulic brakes.

While these may be a tad heavier than the higher end brakes and lack some of the tool free adjustability, they work just as well as the XT brakes I have on another bike. In fact, I've got 4 mountain bikes with 4 different hydraulic brake systems on them ...all much higher up the line than these, and the Deore brakes hold their own against any of them.

These brakes are dead quiet, and offer great power and modulation. Note that I am using them on an XC bike with 160mm rotors for XC riding and racing and they are great in that capability.

If you are looking for super light weight brakes or need something with adjustable pad contact points, these may not be what you want. For the rest of us, they're all you'll need and at 1/2 to 1/3 of the price of the higher end stuff.
