Just like any vital part of a transmission on a car, cassettes wear out. Luckily it won't cost you thousands to replace on your bike. Nothing breathes new life in to your bike like a new cassette (at least after 3 years and thousands of miles). I'm loyal to Shimano after a horrible experience with SRAM, everyone has their own opinion, but you just can't beat Shimano. It's the reliability, quality, value, and performance you'd expect from Deore XT. Don't buy a new bike, just fix your transmission. Bike feels like it shifted off the showroom floor 3 years ago, keeping in mind I replaced the chain along with it.

Had Jenson install when purchased and immediately noticed a faint spoke sound. After a few rides i had thought i had a few loose spokes but every time i checked them i found nothing. As the sound grew louder i had finally found the problem, shimano had designed the big sprocket with pins integrated as to protect from "chain damage to spokes" but these little pins had hit all spokes slightly damaging them. The sprocket had to have the pins lightly ground down with a dremell to clearance the spokes. I would have given it 5 stars but due to the fact that i was replacing the same exact cassette with a new one and the old one did not have the pins and now i had to modify a new cassette, i knocked it to 3 stars. Had jenson caught this on install i would had just bought something else and saved myself some time and spoke damage. If u are thinking the freewheel hub had play it was replaced weeks earlier so that is not the culprit. BTW who has had a chain jump over the large sprocket on the cassette ? Every time my chain derails i am flying and my chain falls to the smallest cog!

Comments about Shimano M770 XT 9 Speed Cassette:

I did not install myself. Replaced a Deoré cassette. Took this into the LBS and they popped in on in just a couple minutes. Shifted perfectly and quietly without adjustment. A bit lighter. Like any part of your gear set, keep it clean and it will last you a lot of miles. Be sure your chain is within tolerance to avoid premature wear.

Comments about Shimano M770 XT 9 Speed Cassette:

I have been using Shimano XTR and XT cassettes for many years and in my opinion you can't beat XT's performance for the dollar. I think the XT line up is the best value in mountain cassettes if you ride Shimano drive trains.

Got this cassette to aid in my upgrade from an old 7-speed system (Deore DX) to 9-speed. I'm using this cassette with XT 770 shifters and the setup is incredibly smooth. Seems to work great with the SRAM PC-971 chain. Haven't used it long enough to comment on durability yet.

Comments about Shimano M770 XT 9 Speed Cassette:

I've been exclusively using Sram cassettes since the 90s but I noticed that they were severly marring the freehub body of my American Classic hub. Since the Shimano didn't have that design limitation, I decided to try it. It's definitely lighter than the equivalent Sram, and it shifts about the same. However, the Shimano is about 14 grams lighter. It does, however, have a more tinney sound when shifting leading me to believe that the cogs are thinner. I was getting about 3-4 chains worth of wear on the PG990/980s and I'm hoping this one lasts as long.
