These are awesome pedals for a great price. They were very easy to set up and are a breeze to adjust. It has become second nature to clip out of these when I need to. I love the extra platform because even when im not clipped in, I have some support under my feet. They are also extremely durable. Ive hit them off of rocks and roots countless times and theyve never missed a beat. After two hard years of use the right pedal has developed some play and the left cage is a little wobbly but i never had them serviced. All they require is an occasional lube on the tension springs and clips. One very small issue that i had with these pedals is that my shoes didnt clip in properly at first becuase the rubber soles of my shoes were interfering with the tops of the cages. All it took was a little dremel work on the shoes. Overall these are awesome pedals and I would definetely buy them again.

Work fine as an SPD...

Work fine as an SPD but Resin cages are not durable enough off road use in New England. Spend the extra $ and get the Aluminum cage SPD pedals.

      Comments about Shimano PD-M424 Pedals:

These pedals are for my 8 year old sons BMX race bike. These are his first set of clipless pedals so I wanted to get him a set with somewhat of a platform. After an adjustment or two he can clip in and out with confidence and his start speed off of the gate is already starting to improve!

      Comments about Shimano PD-M424 Pedals:

Got these a while back to try a platform/clipless hybrid for my XC ride. After a couple years of use going back and forth with M540s I can't say I get a lot of extra stability from the platform. These are still great SPD pedals for the price and have held up to some smashing. I'm not sure the platform cage offers much more than a weight gain for the more advanced XC/trail rider.

          Comments about Shimano PD-M424 Pedals:

I finally made the transition to clipping but was not willing to give up the convenience of spontaneous riding. While not as flat as platforms, these pedals still allow for short rides in whatever you have on your feet. I also think the "platform" helps with the transition to clipping in. I am really happy I went this route.

The pedals work well. They are not the most durable. But for the price they work great. I may go for the aluminum pedals next time.

Comments from a Beginner to Clipless

          By RayGo

          Comments about Shimano PD-M424 Pedals:

I'm new to "Clipless". Prefer the terms Clipped or Unclipped. Anyway, I wanted to try clipless but still wanted a flat unclipped platform, so a dual platform seemed to fit the bill along with Mountain Bike Shoes rather than dedicated bike shoes. I have a mountain bike for riding mainly on paved road but also easy off-trail riding.
I find being clipped in extremely helpful on roads but I was afraid of being clipped in off-road. So I can switch to unclipped when I feel uneasy about the terrain. However, the unclipped platform area does feel small compared to the Odyssey pedals I'm used to. I also feel the "bump" from the front clip when not clipped in. This takes some getting used to especially with regular shoes or sneakers. These pedals are dual-sided so I would seriously consider single-sided pedals such as the Shimano PD-M324 if I had to do it over. However, these pedals are great for the price. I suspect that I will be going clipped more often as I get used to these clips and MTB shoes and use the flat platform just with regular shoes or sneakers.
One other hint. Lighten up the clip tension before trying them out for the first time. I used the default tension setting on the pedal and only clipped in my right foot. I could not unclip my shoe no matter what I tried. I had to pull my foot out of the shoe, get off the bike and then finally managed to yank the shoe out. I slightly mangled the bottom of the shoe where the clips are attached. I use a tension setting of 3 full turns and I can now easily clip and unclip without slipping out.

          Comments about Shimano PD-M424 Pedals:

I am new to beign clipped and so far it has been a positive experience with these pedals. I can ride with normal shoes if I want to. I have ridden a technical single-track unclipped, although I did not feel 100% confident, since the plataform is not wide enough. But for cruising or non-technical rides, you would not have a problem. Would recommend this pedal to someone new to clips. Great value also.
