good grip in dry dusty conditions, good mtb tire for kids

Comments about Maxxis Maxxdaddy 20" BMX Tire:

Never had them in mud but my 6 year old was washing out in his not too worn earlier tires in dusty conditions. He had one of these on the rear but was washing out up front. Once I put one of these on the front he was doing a lot better on off camber trails and dry dusty loose spots, seemed to be controlling his speed better too but maybe that is just him getting to be a better rider.

Comments about Maxxis Maxxdaddy 20" BMX Tire:

My son really dug the bold lettering on the tire, then promptly began to lay out big skids again in the street-feed the fire I guess.

Okay tires, but won't true

Pros

  • Attractive Design
  • Works Better On Wet Marl

Cons

  • Difficult To Install
  • Tires Aren't True

Best Uses

  • Casual Riding
  • Mountain Biking

Comments about Maxxis Maxxdaddy 20" BMX Tire:

I purchased these for our son's new Cannondale mountain bike. Great bike, lousy tires for dirt and marl roads, especially when wet as the original pavement designed tires became slicks once they caked and coated with the wet marl. These tires are much better in that they continue to dig in a bit even when starting to cake up with the wet marl. Of course, they have a notable delta to rolling resistance compared to the happy rolling tires that inappropriately came on his mountain bike. The reason for the 3 star rating was the extreme difficulty getting the tires to resemble round. It was impossible to do away with the rise and fall wobble due to the uneven tire build. The wheels were true, but no matter what I did both tires always returned to an obvious rise and fall wobble. Also, these tires were VERY thin compared to the sturdy and thick tires that they replaced. I'm concerned that these tires will puncture easily, especially on the almost paper thin sidewalls. If it wasn't such a hassle to return them, and the likelihood that all of these tires have the same flaws, I would have exchanged them. I'm on the fence about recommending them. Had I seen them in person, I likely would have continued to look at other tires.

These have a wire bead - I plan on setting them up tubeless with sealant and ripstrip. Does anyone know if this will work?
