Easton Haven Carbon UST 26" Wheel 2012

Easton Haven Carbon 26" UST Wheel

Whispering to the scales at just 1,450 grams per pair, the Haven Carbon is the lightest carbon rimmed, UST compatible all-mountain wheelset on the market and features the first carbon rim designed exclusively for the rigors of rugged trail riding. The Haven Carbon features a generous, 21-mm internal rim width that will accommodate tires up to 2.4-inches wide and Easton puts their money where their mouth is by backing the Haven Carbon with a two-year, no-questions-asked insurance policy.

Their unique threaded eyelet system employs a nipple that’s threaded both internally and externally. The Haven also employs conventional straight-pull spokes and can be trued like a standard wheel. The carbon rims showcase numerous industry-leading design and engineering features: They are made with Easton’s proprietary ABC (Armored Ballistic Composite) materials including HMPE (High Modulus Polyethylene), the product of choice for ultra-light body armor and other ballistic military applications. Proprietary resins provide the ABC composite with highly enhanced impact strength. Like all Easton wheels, the Haven Carbon is built by hand using Easton’s proprietary acoustic tension and truing system.

  • Armored Ballistic Composite

nice set of hoops
I put these wheels on my 2002 Ventana El Saltamontes to breathe some new life into an old steed. First off, I was greatly impressed by the weight and appearance of the wheels out of the box.
These are UST rims, so I will definitely try installing UST tires next time I buy tires - however, I did not have any UST tires, I had a slightly used 2.2" Kenda Slant Six for the rear, and a brand new 2.4" Conti Trail King for the front. I donno if it's because these are not UST tires or what, but installation was the most difficult tire installation task I've ever faced - particularly with the new Conti. It required a ton of soap on the beads, popping a few veins, a lot of swearing, and several beers to relax afterwards. The front tire took me 3 different attempts on 3 days to finally get it on - and I was about ready to return the wheels.
Needless to say, this is very worrisome in terms of what would happen if I flatted on the trail? Will I be able to remove a tire? Will I be able to get it back on? I just pray that I do not get a flat... and I'm bringing a bottle of detergent or sex lube with me on long rides in case I flat say 20 miles out.
When I finally got to ride the bike I can definitely say that the wheels have made a noticeable difference to the ride.
The rims are nice and wide - seems to help make a tire live up to it's claimed width (ie. the 2.4" definitely looks like 2.4 inches).
They are very laterally stiff - they snap right in an out of turns very easily and I found myself taking switchbacks in 1 or 2 gears higher than I would normally use.
They are noticeably lighter and they feel quite strong. They have a strange sort of feeling if you case a wheel on a rock, compared to the sharp clunk I'm used to feeling with an aluminum rim, the carbon seems to deaden the impact a lot - which is nice, just surprising at first.
One concern of mine is the bearing adjustment. After only 2 rides, the rear hub has loosened up. Apparently it's quite easy to adjust the bearing preload, so hopefully that will not be a problem figuring out how to dial that in properly. If it's very easy, then perhaps it's not such a big deal to have to check the hubs before each ride - tho compared to all of the rims I've ridden before, this is a new pre-ride task (never had to do this on Chris King, DT, or Hope hubs).
As I've only had two rides on these so far and have not had to remove the tires yet, I feel like I can't totally recommend these yet as I don't have enough qualified experience.
Having read a lot of reviews on these, it seems like hub bearing issues are quite common and some other people have also complained about the difficulty of mounting tires.
I'm guessing that perhaps UST rims are just more of a pain to mount tires on, as my old front rim was a Mavic x817 and it was also not anywhere as easy to mount as any of the other rims I've ridden (Mavic x717, WTB laser disc, Bontrager Mustang, etc.)

You want a warranty? Easton! My dumba$$ melted a rim when I put my bike on a friend's car too close to the exhaust pipe. I knew about the danger and Easton warrantied it no questions asked! I'm so sick of companies that produce inferior, untested products with the quality of wet kleenex. Easton is the opposite! This rim withstood Enduro beatings for years the I melted it and they gave me a new one!

Awesome improvement to my Titus
These wheels were an awesome improvement to my Titus Moto Lite. They are light, rigid and snappy. It improved my confidence in more technical terrain as it is easier to maneuver the bike. It is easier to instantly accelerate up over rocks and other obstacles.

So far they have stayed true and not had problems. I'm admittedly fairly easy on my equipment as I prefer more cross-country terrain and I'm relatively light at 165 lbs.

I wouldn't pay full price for these, but at this sale price they are well worth it.

Love this wheel set
This is my second wheelset from Easton. My first set was the Havoc DH and it was not great. This Haven set is AWESOME. I put these on my Santa Cruz Blur LT. First, I mounted a set of Maxxis High roller ust tires. Super easy to mount compared to the Sram I used to run. Tires went on without a lever! No compressor needed, just a pump and the bead set.(Please note getting the tire back off takes a little patience) On my first ride I did not notice much difference between my Sram Carbon wheels on acceleration, however the lateral stiffness these wheels have compared to the Rise 60 is awesome! I would highly recommend this Wheel set to anyone AM or XC. This wheel hub has upgrade-able bearing kit from Easton.

Carbon is nice!
This wheel is as good and strong as any I've ridden. And given how light they are I'd say they are the best all around wheel anywhere. I noticed an immediate increase in traction with the wider rim profile. I've got nothing bad to say about these wheels especially with the Jenson USA price.

SOLID upgrade to my circa-2007 frame. I had a hard time picking a tire, as any tire I can find is heavier than this wheel! These wheels have saved me from a taco in more than one instance. They're quick, agile, and have taken everything I've thrown at it.

Easton has done it again!
This wheel set has held up in the toughest of abuse. Lightweight, durable and really darn sporty. Though I expected nothing less from the good folks over at Easton.

Solid but not "bombproof"
This Haven is the third rear wheel I've put on my Yeti ASR-7 in 2.5 seasons. Season 1 was a Stan's Flow. (The hub failed completely after a year while I fought through about 4 busted spokes in that time.) Wheel 2 was an aluminum Haven. A month in, I looked at the wheel and it had a half dozen dents.

I turned to the carbon Haven based on the marketing material--"bombproof" and "no questions asked" warranty.

I've made it about a year. Now I'm seemingly breaking a spoke every other ride. Easton has been helpful and given me replacements. They've also given me improved hub components. Easton's been solid in supporting me.

It's a buzzkill to break a spoke on a ride (and do it on multiple rides). But, I'm realistic and know I'm hard on the wheel. (My ideal ride is a chunky endeavor.) The rim is beat up cosmetically but is not taco'ed like my aluminum one was.

The wheel isn't perfect but I'm satisfied enough to have just bought a second one.

PROS: Stiff, Customer support, Attractive Design, Easy To Install, Lightweight

CONS: Nevegal Removal, No Removable Core, Weak Spokes, Pricey, Spoke Durability
