Zee is Shimano’s new line of Gravity-specific components, for those of us who do not have multi-million dollar sponsors. The 10 speed Zee RD-M640 features Shimano's premier Shadow Plus technology, which introduces a switchable friction clutch into the rear linkage that significantly reduces chain noise and offers a more stable drivetrain through rough terrain. With a flick of an anodized gold switch, it also virtually eliminates chain slap, makes changing out rear wheels easier, and reduces the possibility of dropping your chain.

Zee is tuned specifically for 1x10 applications, although narrow range 2x10 applications will also work with this derailleur so long as extreme gear combinations are not used. The Zee derailleur is offered in two short cage (SS) configurations: DH and FR. The DH derailleur has a specific actuation arc that will closely follow closely spaced DH ratio cassettes, up to 11-28T. The FR version is designed for riders who hit more varied terrain, and want to go uphill as well as downhill, featuring capacity up to 11-36T cassettes.

Feature-packed, and surprisingly light, the Zee rear derailleur is designed specifically for hard gravity riders on a budget, because everyone, not just the pros, should be able to crush every line.

  • Shadow Plus Chain Stabilization Technology
  • Short Cage (SS cage)
  • Compatible with 10-speed Shimano Dyna-Sys shifters only.
  • Shadow RD technology: Super low-profile design with built in chain stabilizer
  • DH Spec - 28T Max Cog Capacity
  • FR Spec - 36T Max Cog Capacity
  • Chain Wrap Capacity: 25T (both DH and FR spec)
  • Actual Weight: 268g

I was very excited about purchasing the Zee deraileuer after reading so many positive reviews online. I was converting my 2014 GT Karakoram Elite over to a 1 x 10 drive train. I selected a Shimano XT shifter, Race Face Chester Cranks and BB with 32T narrow wide chain ring and light bashguard. In the rear I selected the ZEE deraileuer (the one that handles up to a 36T), XT 11-36 Cassette and XT 10 Speed Chain. Everything looked awesome and definitely dropped significant weight from the bike. I was on a 15 mile ride for the first time on a flat rail trail. Everything was shifting smoothly until about the last mile where my chain completely missed the smallest cog. The chain wound up jammed between the smallest cog and my frame, doing some damage to the frame. I took it to my LBS that did the installation and they adjusted the deraileuer and cable tension and sent me on my merry way. I then rode another 12 miles and experienced the same miss-shift going from the 9 to 10th gear. Back to the LBS. They adjusted it again. I then put about 1.5 hrs in on some pretty rocky trails and was happy to report no chain drops or miss-shifting. I thought the problem was fixed until I did the same 15 mile ride with the same miss-shifting problem once again on the last mile. Back to the LBS and they were able to recreate the problem as well. Trying to come up with a solution for the problem they began swapping components such as the shifter, cassette, wheels and deraileuer. Changing out a ZEE deraileuer for an SLX seemed to correct the miss-shifting issue. I wound up removing the ZEE deraileuer in favor for an XT Shadow Plus Medium cage and have not had any miss-shifts or chain drops. I don't know if it just happened to be my set-up or just bad luck but I am bummed not to be able to use the ZEE. It's a great looking design and seems bulletproof, it just wasn't working for me. I would recommend it however after reading such great reviews online.

I wanted to love this product. When you first put it on its the coolest, but wait until it needs the first adjustment.

The clutch when set to on is so stiff, it causes the main derailleur spring to be the weak spot. So through the rough stuff instead of the arm moving the whole derailleur does. After some use in top gear at the bike park this effectively hammers the high limit screw into a mushroom, and after further adjustment the screw eventually bends and the derailleur gets louder as it goes.

I cut out the limit screw and replaced it with a hardened aftermarket piece, shortly after the body itself cracked along the limit screws.

This design flaw just kills the product for me, negating all of the features and benefits shimano designed in. The saint has a built in bump stop...wonder why

Comments about Shimano M640 Zee Rear Derailleur:

I'm now a huge fan of the Zee line. It will save you some bones without sacrificing quality and performance. I love the uber short cage and string clutch. Haven't dropped a chain yet! Shifts smoother than my previous XT derailleur and it holds up better on the unforgiving descents. Go all in and get the matching Zee shifter to get the best performance.

Comments about Shimano M640 Zee Rear Derailleur:

This was a replacement to a SRAM GX 2.10 Derailleur. It is very durable. I Live in Ecuador and during the rainy season the gears get put through the wringer, but this Shimano Zee has been very sturdy and durable with no problems with mud, rain and whatever else I can throw at it.

Comments about Shimano M640 Zee Rear Derailleur:

Best bang for the buck especially when on sale at Jenson. Have three on different bikes and all perform very well. No chain slap thanks to the clutch mechanism. Two are running on 40 T cassettes with no problems, just make sure you buy the FR one. Short cage length tucks it right up tight against chain stay keeping it out of harms way (my favorite feature). Cable clamp could grip a little better as I have had it slip a few times. you just have to honk on it a little more than you would think necessary when tightening it and it's good to go.

Comments about Shimano M640 Zee Rear Derailleur:

Great value for a clutch type derailleur. I was able to install this onto a 9 speed SRAM setup using X5 front shifters and it works great. Unfortunately there are no 9 speed clutch type derailleurs but this one is doing the trick for me. The reduced chain slap is well worth the price.

Ordered this for a 1x9 conversion and even though it is technically a 10 speed derailler, it works fine with my 9 speed cassette and SRAM shifter. Tough, light weight, and quiet! I paired it with a Raceface narrow wide chainring and have had no problem with chain drops either with or without the clutch engaged. Great derailler and very reasonably priced!

I had a full Sram drivetrain on my new Scott voltage and I had always had shimano before so I did a drivetrain swap and it works flawlessly run after run and race after race, and the practicality of the clutch is great, no chain drops and keeps the chain tension tight with no chain slaps/clatter and movement. I paired this with a zee shifter and 105 cassette so I am using the DH version of the mech. And it's the best bang for your buck!

                Works 1x9 or 1x10.
                Very crisp and smooth shifting.
The clutch is very nice, preventing slap and drops. Paired this system up with a Narrow wide chainring.

Never had a Drop. Cheaper than SLX etc. with the same tech.
