Shimano PD-M540 SPD Pedals

Shimano PD-M540 Pedals

Inspired by the top of the line XTR racing pedals, the M540 offers a similar sculpted body and minimalist axle design. The open body sheds mud easily and yields easy cleat entry and exit in all types of riding conditions. SPD® binding mechanisms on both sides of the pedal make entry fast and easy without the need for pedal flipping. Adjustable release tension lets you dial in the binding mechanism. This is the top-of-the-line pedal for those who don't want the top of the line price.

Package includes two pedals and Shimano SPD cleats.

First clipless
This is my first set of clipless pedals and was nervous the first time I rode with them. I set them to the lowest tension and was surprised how esay they were to get in and out of. It's been over a year now and they still work as good as the day that I got them. Best upgrade for any rider.

Great Pedals
I have only owned Shimano pedals since I have never had a reason to try anything else. I have been on 3 rides so far. These pedals are great. My past 3 sets of pedals were a the lower model than these, decided to give these a try since they are lighter and a great price. No regrets.

Tough pedals
M540 pedals are nearly bulletproof. I have abused one pair of these for 3 years and they are still easy to clip in and out and hold my foot in place while riding. I am constantly amazed that they still work when I beat them on an immovable rock. They shed mud well and wash up easily.

Since I like to be able to escape in difficult situations, I apply a light coat of White Lightning wax chain lube to the contact surfaces before each ride. That gives a smooth and predictable exit every time I need it.

These are great pedals. I have not found another that is as reliable at any cost.

Excellent performance and value
Over the past 20 years I have used many different pedal brands and have found Shimano to easily be the best.

Within the Shimano line I started buying xtr level p went down to xt and finally down to these. They work just as well and are as durable as the more expensive Shimano offerings.

I use the SH56 multi release cleat as I climb steep rock faces and if the attempt is missed then its necessary to get unclipped in a hurry.

If your on a budget or like me a buyer who likes to get great value, this pedal is the perfect choice. Hope that helps out.

Great MTB pedals
switched from platform pedals to these and have been very happy with the switch. was a bit reluctant to use clipless pedals on technical trails but after taking it easy the first mile or so I found myself hitting it pretty hard with the confidence that I could unclip easily if needed.

Strong as, good for learners
The Shimano Clipless pedals are unbelievably strong and for there value they are great. They are great for learners as they are really easy to clip in and out of. The only problem with them are that they are extremely heavy.

PROS: Easy to change tightness, Good for beginners

CONS: Heavy

BEST USES: Road, Cross country
