Continental Trail King Protection 29"

Continental Trail King 29R Tire

All hail the Trail King! Ruler of All-Mountain rubber! The Continental Trail King is a superior all-mountain tire with an aggressive tread pattern for excellent grip on a variety of surfaces, ensuring you'll dominate the trail at every turn. Special Apex-reinforced sidewall reduces tire roll under hard cornering, and keeps things under control on hard landings, while the ProTection technology incorporates a puncture protection layer and tubeless capability.

This version of the Trail King features Continental's famous Black Chili compound. Black Chili compound hit the market in 2007, and has been a hit with cyclists ever since, as it has proven to take tire performance to the next level, in all areas. The BlackChili compound lasts longer, grips better, and rolls faster. It has 26% less rolling resistance, 30% higher grip, and even 5% longer mileage. The Black Chili Compound is only made in Korbach Germany, and the recipe is not shared with any other tire manufacturer.

The Revolution Tubeless Ready system provides the perfect combination of smooth running, grip, and puncture protection. ProTection RTR features 4 ply heavy duty nylon (4 under tread, 3 in the sidewall.) The Revolution Tubeless Ready (RTR) system offers a UST style bead, and mid-weight casing for full tubeless compatibility. For optimal results, Continental recommends using the Continental RevoSealant with these tires.

Note: If Stan's was previously used, both the tire and rim must be scrubbed using Simple Green or a similar cleaner, before Continental Revo Sealant can be used.

Comments about Continental Trail King Protection 29":

Fast rolling over loose and hardpack, but bites when you need it in clay, rock and soft dirt. Good side grip for turns, too. Matches well as the rear with the Mountain King on the front for most situations in North Georgia and the Pisgah area.

Comments about Continental Trail King Protection 29":

The 29er versions of Continental tires are nothing like the 26" and 27.5" versions in terms of width, so reading about these tires online is misleading. These were much, much skinnier than expected, for 29 inch tires the 2.2 is about a 2.1 and the 2.4 is about a 2.2. Also for the MK2 29er tires 2.2 is like a 2.05 and 2.4 is a 2.2. Arts Cyclery's website has accurate widths in their tire descriptions.
This tire is perfect as a front tire at my local trails here in Georgia on Cross country or all mountain bikes, I have never lost control of my front tire on loose over hardpack turns unlike my old front Nevegal tire that floated over loose dirt. The Black chili compound is also better than I expected and makes a huge difference.
When I ride in North GA mountains I will probably be switching back to my Kenda Nevegal for the front, since the skinny tire is less stable for rocky DH.

Comments about Continental Trail King Protection 29":

Installed tubeless front and rear on my Giant XTC 29 hardtail with XT785 tubeless rims. Used Stan"s sealant.
Front tire kept losing air thru sidewalls. Adding more sealant slowed the leakage but I still had to re-inflate every day to keep the pressure right.
Rear tire sealed great but was not true from initial installation. Rim is true, installation is straight. Tire sits straight on rim. But still, about an 1/8th of the turn, the tire is off-centered. Must be defective manufacturing.

Today (two weeks after initial installation and less than 200km total) the bead of the front tire started peeling off of the tire. I had to replace it.
Since I couldn't get the rear tire to be true, I replaced it as well. I'll keep it for "emergency spare".

Bottom line is: two tires of same make and model suffer two faults. I will not be buying more of those. Lost my faith in them.

On the positive side I can say that while they lasted, the tires offered excellent grip and relatively low rolling resistance for a 2.2.

Comments about Continental Trail King Protection 29":

Continental Trail Kings have become my "go to" mountain bike tire given their superb grip and durability. I have made many friends Trail King believers!!

Whether you get the RTR or UST version you've got to initially install them with a tube to get them stretched and seated before going tubeless.
