The Hans Dampf tire made its debut at the Sea Otter Classic last year and critics raved that it set new standards in rubber. The Hans Dampf has strong lugs and sidewalls, as well as grippy TrailStar compound tread. The TrailStar compound is unique in that Schwalbe combined three different rubber mixtures to create a grippy tread center, and even gripper shoulders. Tubeless ready, add latex fluid to the Hans Dampf and enjoy the benefits of high puncture protection, low rolling resistance, and the ability to run lower pressures.

i finally splurged and bought this tire brand new. i have never paid this much for a tire. after todays ride i am so glad i did. i took it to the super steep DH single tracks of the verdugo's where its loose over hard pack and traction is hard to find. it stuck way better than the spechy purgatory it replaced, and other tires i have ridden on: captains, ardents, ignitors, mountain kings. i only put it on the front and was running an ardent in the rear but it blows the ardent away as far as traction so i am going to buy another one and put it on the rear as well. this tire made my riding so much more fun and safe today.

The side knobs tore on the inside very early on when using as a front tire. The tire appears to show no signs of wear other than the side knobs releasing. None of them have completely come off, but they are all torn about halfway and the tire doesn't corner confidently as it did when it was new because of this. Loved the tread pattern and initial grip.

Comments about Schwalbe Hans Dampf 29" Trailstar Tire:

I first used this tire riding around Zermatt on trails that are rocky and notorious for inflicting flats on tires that seemed robust in all prior environments. It was also wet and steep. The Hans Dampf was outstanding and raised one's level of confidence to a new level. I run it tubeless on the rear of a Remedy 29er. Will likely also put one on the front sometime soon.

Nice upgrade over the stock Bontragers that came on my Trek Rumblefish. Set these up for tubeless. Allows use of lower air pressure.

Comments about Schwalbe Hans Dampf 29" Trailstar Tire:

Ran these in the XC Nationals (65+). Mounted a fresh trailstar compound Hans Dampf on the front for 2 preride laps and then the race. Won my class but after the race many of the side knobs were badly torn. Perhaps the Pacestar compound is much longer lasting.

They tracked beautifully through the rock gardens at full throttle. They are wide enough to keep the tire out of cracks. They are heavy (~800 gm) but the extra half pound paid for itself in speed and confidence.

So... they did exactly what I wanted (successfully raced a rocky technical course) but would not last as a daily ride.

Comments about Schwalbe Hans Dampf 29" Trailstar Tire:

I run the HansDampf 2.35 (29er) Evo Snakeskin (Trailstar compound) up front on my bike and I just love it. Best tire I've ever tried. Grip for braking and steering are off the charts. Cornering is rock-solid and very predictable. Many reviewers claim that this tire is slow. In my opinion it is actually a bit quicker than other big-knob front tires I've run in the past like Kenda Nevegals, Maxxis Ardents. Schwalbe's triple compound strategy and tread/knob spacing design works pretty well. The knobs in the center of the tire are a bit harder and I think they roll pretty well. Obviously it's not an XC race tire. It's designed for serious traction. I'm just saying that compared to similar tires I've found it quicker than the others. I've also tried the Schwalbe Nobby Nick (same size configuration) which is also a pretty terrific tire. I think the HD has a bit of a rounder shoulder shape than the NN. The NN's shoulder transition is more squared-off and abrupt I think; and, I prefer the slightly more rounded shoulder shape of the Hans Dampf. I have had no problems with durability with these tires. I've put several hundreds of miles on them and they're holding up very well. Highly recommended despite the high price.

Comments about Schwalbe Hans Dampf 29" Trailstar Tire:

The HD's are a big soft tire that measures up to the stated size. Its large nobs are very soft and braking performance is incredible. Works real well on So Cal trails. After 100 miles I noticed the back was taking a real beating and the soft knobs were starting to show some damage. The tire is just to expensive to destroy so I replaced the rear with an old Bontrager. I lost a little grip in back but gained some speed back. The HD's are a slow tires if you run them front and back. Overall I love the grip with the only shortcoming being rocks between the size of an almond and a walnut on fire roads. The tire is pretty loose when you hit that stuff, don't see much of it though.

Using Hans Dampf Snake Skin 29x2.35 as a front tire. There is nothing this tire can't do. I feel 99% safer, faster in corners and all together better with this tire compared to: Nevegal, Conti Trail King, Conti Mountain King, WTB Nano Raptor, Maxxis Ardent. The price is high but if you are buying tires once or twice a year($30ish more than any decent tire)it is worth paying $30 or $60 extra a year for this quality of ride. (I only have time to ride about twice a week.)
With Hans Dampf on the front and Nobby Nick on the back my riding just climed to a whole other level - it is trully worth the price.
