Shimano 105 BR-5800 Road Brakes

Shimano 105 BR-5800 Road Brakes

Setting a new bar in the trickle-down technology trend, Shimano 105 5800 brings uncompromising 11-speed road performance to the more budget conscious rider. With a foundation set firmly on the success of Dura-Ace and Ultegra, Shimano's 105 5800 group is a workhorse component package that can hang with the best the industry has to offer. Powerful improvements across the range deliver optimized drivetrain and braking performance that will instantly take your riding to a whole new level. There are lots of flashy, distracting contenders out there, but if you're main focus is getting down to business, the new Shimano 105 group is ready to log some overtime.

For the 5800 series, Shimano didn't only focus on shifting improvements. The 5800 group now offers the same symmetrical dual pivot design found in the Ultegra and Dura Ace groups. Twin bearings at the pivots decrease friction and make for an exceptional brake feel and performance. These updates result in a 10% power increase and the new design allows for up to 28mm high volume tires.

Shimano 105 BR-5800 Road Brake Features:

  • Symetrical dual-pivot design
  • Twin bearings at pivots
  • 10% power increase over 5700 series
  • Alloy construction
  • Fits tires up to 28mm

Excellent
Beautifully functional. Powerful, smooth, precise. Nice extra features.

These may lack the aesthetic elegance of other dual-pivot designs (they look a little "robo-mech" if that makes any sense), and as others have noted they're a bit on the heavy side, but neither of these is a concern for me which is why I didn't list them as cons. Besides, both issues are more than offset by functionality and features.

It should be noted that these ship with a variety of lengths of brake nuts for the front fork. Also, the brake shoe holders are adjustable to allow for toeing-in; and there's a centering nut for precise centering of the brake arms.

It should also be noted that if you're running an older set up, as I am, the lower cup / fork crown race of the headset may interfere with the front brake. Clearly, these were designed with integrated headsets in mind. I added a few millimeters of washers to push the front brake out beyond the protruding headset. No issues. Bear in mind though, I'm not racing on these brakes, and I'm a light rider -- but I do ride in heavy traffic every day, four-seasons, all-weather.

Best bang for the buck....
Be ready. These brakes won't disappoint. Price wise has to be the best upgrade you can get for the buck. These brake bite, and doesn't take much effort. Great for young junior riders that don't have a strong grip.

Solid brakeset to round out a 105 groupo
I purchased this 5800 105 brakeset as an upgrade to the FSA Gossamer Pro brakes that came on my bike. The absolute stopping power of these 105 brakes is about the same as the FSAs, but the feel at the brake lever is much better, more rigid and solid feeling. Well worth it, and rounded out the rest of the 105 components that came on the bike. Note that the barrel adjusters on these brakes will not work with ferrules on the cables; I just swapped the barrel adjusters from the FSA calipers and left the cables as is.

PROS: Attractive Design, Solid feel, Easy To Install

CONS: NONE

Shimano 5800 dual pivot brakes
Love the new design of the Shimano 105-5800 series brakes. The braking power is noticeably better than either the 105 5700 or the Ultegra 6700 series brakes

Solid Clampers!
OEM brakes on my son's road bike were weak. The bike has enough clearance to run 30c tires with tread so he's using it for some Cyclocross. Brakes became a major drawback! This new Shimano design is stout, provides much-improved stopping power. Just what we needed. As these are 105s they could be lighter, but you get serious Bang for the Buck with these clampers.

PROS: Durable

CONS: Not lightweight

BEST USES: Road Biking, Cyclocross
