This product came on...
This product came on a Specialized Hard Rock. It would not hold up to moderate off road climbs. It ghost shifted like a maniac making riding uphill very difficult. On the downhill, the amount of chain slap was incredulous. I would only use this on a child's road or city bike. I replaced it with the Shimano Deore LX derailleur from Jenson and all my problems were solved

Works like charm
This rather odd looking derailleur works very good. The unconventional large pulley allows this to work on most gearing setups.

This is a fine...
This is a fine derailleur for on road purposes, but I would never use it off road. I have it on a 2009 Specialized Sirrus, as a stock derailleur. If it ever breaks, I will be upgrading to either LX or Sora, as I have had an LX rear derailleur for 10 years and it has seen mud, sand, wet conditions, etc and never a hiccup. The LX is worth the 3x the price...4 stars because its OK for fairly dust and mud free conditions on smooth surfaces!

help improve my ride
Best thing I like is it works. Replaced a derailleur that I purchase from a local bike shop. That seem to fall apart then I destroyed with a bent stay and getting a pannier stuck in the spokes. It still holding up even though pick up a few sticks and thought I ruin this one too. Thanks Jensen! For keeping me biking.

The Shimano Altus...
The Shimano Altus seems to be a good unit at a reasonable price. It has held up pretty good for a year now.

I've had nothing but...
I've had nothing but good experience with this derailleur. Granted, I'm just a weekend warrior tooling on singletrack in central NC. I've taken it out to Pisgah in western NC and it still got the job done with no hiccups. I've never had to adjust it and it has never skipped a beat. Just take care of it, and it will take care of you.

Altus
While I will admit that it is light, quick, easy to adjust, and cheap, it still isn't all that good. From day one I dealt with ghost shifting, the chain riding on the tips of the gear teeth in large gear, and chain kicking in small gears. From the factory the tension spring was to weak which is the cause of most of that. The Altus can't in any way handle rough terrain or hard pedalling and constantly gets out of alignment. I will say this much though, the blasted thing can take one heck of a beating and perform the same as when you got it.

PROS: Lightweight, Durable, Attractive Design

CONS: Ghost Shifting, Weak Tension Spring

BEST USES: Kids Bike, Casual Riding, Road Biking
