These have been around almost as long as I've been mountain biking, and are a consistently solid, strong product. These wheels are not snakebite proof, but stay round. They are heavy, but I run double wall tires to run low pressure and these work well for the up and the down b/c. Low pressure absolutely helps traction. I run about 18lbs, and can roll over anything.

Shimano hubs are by far the best bang for the buck, as no one wants a hub to go, which would mean rebuilding the whole wheel. If your freehub goes, that can be replaced as well, which is NOT the case with Formula.:(

I have used these wheels for several years. They are good at everything without being great at anything. These rims are definitely not fragile, but not as durable as the Sun DS 2 XC rims that I picked up for a similar price. They go out of true with less abuse than the Suns. They also weigh considerably more. What they ARE is cheap, relatively durable, and compatible with many different systems. That is probably the reason that these wheels have been sold nearly everywhere for the past 10 years.

Buy these wheels if: you want an extra set of wheels to keep inflated tires on for emergencies, or you just need a wheel for casual mountain biking.

Avoid these wheels if: you want something better than what you have. If you are looking to upgrade your current wheels, save your money for something either more durable or lighter.

These wheels are ok for just about everyone, but they are not the best of anything.

Comments about Shimano Deore Disc/Rhyno Lite Wheelset:

Great strong rims, hubs are easy to service the bearings. I have put over 1,200 miles on these and have had 5 spoke tophats snap at the reinforced spoke holes for no reason at all. Just standard riding on a paved path when everyone of them broke. Other than this issue, I love these rims.

Bought a set 5 years ago thinking I would taco them in a year so I didn't want to break the bank. I'm still riding on them to this day. They are a fantastic, durable wheelset at a great price. If I ever manage to kill this set I'll buy another. The only downside is the heavier weight but you don't sacrifice durability.

Comments about Shimano Deore Disc/Rhyno Lite Wheelset:

I have had these on my bike for over five years now. Every year I take my bike to the LBS for a tune up and they have yet to have to true these wheels. The hubs are still quiet and smooth as day one even after all the dirt and mud and abuse I put them through. I'm 6 ft and 210 lbs, so these wheels work hard and don't complain.

Upgraded my DBR X6 from previous Mavic rims with 4-bolt disc rotor upfront and rear clinchers. I love the sturdy feel of these rims as well as the quality Shimano hubs. Wheels run true and after about 6 hours of riding all is good. Great deal.

just a great value for a really nice wheel set. I used these to upgrade an older mountain bike and I really feel the difference in the ride and performance. I mostly use the bike as a commuter, so haven't had a lot of offroad use yet, but I have no doubts about these wheels.
