Shimano Deore XT PD-T780 Pedals

Shimano PD-T780 Deore XT Pedals

The Shimano PD-T780 Deore XT Pedals offer both the efficiency of a SPD pedal and the convenience of a platform pedal in a slim, low-profile package. Thinner than the typical SPD/platform combination pedal, the PD-T780 is subtle when it comes to styling and bold when it's time to perform. The versatile PD-T780 was designed to meet the needs of the long distance touring rider and the everyday commuter. Clip in when it's time to get after it, or use the platform with your casual shoes on a trip to the grocery store. The choice is yours.

Features:

  • Combines the efficiency of the SPD system and the convenience of a platform pedal
  • Integrated reflector
  • Forged alloy body, cromoly axle
  • Adjustable entry and release tension settings
  • Sealed mechanism and serviceable cup & cone bearings
  • SPD cleats included
  • Claimed weight: 392g

First On The Block
I haven't seen these pedals at any of my local bike stores. I'd seen them offered online from overseas vendors. When I saw them pop up on JensonUSA, I ordered a pair immediately.

I do a fair amount of commuting on my bike, 10-20 miles per day including weekends. I need pedals that I can use comfortably whether I'm wearing street shoes or riding shoes. Originally I chose Shimano PD-M324 pedals. My problem was that the pedal cages were breaking skin if I accidentally spun a pedal into the front or back of my lower leg while wearing shorts.

The Shimano PD-T780 eliminated that problem. They give me the ability to wear street or riding shoes and their smoothly machined platforms aren't chewing up my shins and calves.

The only negative I have found is the black finish. Naturally it doesn't stand up to the cleats on my riding shoes. I've been riding them for little more than a week and the platform side finish is scratched up.

Quality pedal
I agree with an earlier poster - if you want a combination SPD / platform pedal, stop looking and buy this!

I returned to cycling after my retirement last year, and am looking to increase activity by completing one or more full century rides in 2015 (last year completed a metric century).

After extensive research I think this represents the ideal upgrade pedal for my purposes, namely:
~ quality SPD pedal, which combined with my new Shimano shoes improve both comfort and efficiency;
~ platform side is perfect for those times I do not consider clipping in to be ideal (shopping trips, social rides with my wife involving many stops/busy bike paths).

In operation, the pedal 'rests' at a consistent place so that it is a simple matter to find the side you want (flip top of pedal forward for SPD; flip top back for platform).

Jenson discounted pricing made this quality pedal even more attractive compared to what was available locally.

Great Pedals
Prefer clipping in for commuting, but sometimes use bike for casual neighborhood rides. The clip side clips easily, but large enough to get through an intersection if you have trouble clipping in. Non-clip side not as sharp as some combo pedals, great for flip-flop Saturday morning cruise. Using on Amsterdam-style city-bike

Nice Smooth "flip-flop" Pedals
These are by far the highest combination platform / cleat pedal I have found. I really appreciate that I can have an XT quality SPD pedal together with a comfortable platform for casual use.

The only real downside here is that these do not install/uninstall with a standard pedal wrench, but instead only with a large hex wrench. This is not a big problem, however, since the reason to get these pedals is to not have to switch them out all the time.

PROS: Lightweight, Durable, Attractive Design

CONS: Difficult To Install

Love these Pedals
I've owned a lot of Shimano Clipless Pedals over the last decade and these are by far the easiest Shimanos to get into quickly without "searching" for the click in. Love the fact that the street, non clip less side, has a cage that won't tear up your shins if you roll off of it. Love the Deore XT quality too. would buy again.

Can the reflectors be removed? Big miss if not...
A shopper on May 5, 2017
BEST ANSWER: You can *always* remove something like this, but it may not be pretty, they're not simply bolted on, but appear to be pretty heavily glued.
I bet they weigh all of 2-3 grams or something though, and moving reflectors really catch peoples' eyes at night, I think I'd want to have them (until they inevitably fall off, at some point...).
