NOT COMPATIBLE with Aluminum Freehub
The CS-HG61 cassette is made with individual cogs riveted together. As such, it is NOT compatible with an aluminum freehub.

Pedaling torque is not distributed over the entire freehub as it would be if the cassette were made with a cog carrier in the center, so it causes each cog to dig into the grooves on the freehub.
After a few months, that damage can get so severe that it may be necessary to essentially destroy the cassette (prying off individual cogs) in order to remove it from the freehub.

Unfortunately, this appears to be the only cassette available with a 36T low end, so if your freehub is made of aluminum, the only options for using this product seem to be:

1) If possible, replace your aluminum freehub with a steel freehub. Not all hub/wheel manufacturers offer this option.
2) Use a cassette with an internal cog carrier. There do not appear to be any such products that have a 36T low gear, so that also means you must have stronger legs.
3) Plan on replacing the freehub and possibly also the cassette if you ever need to take the wheel apart.

PROS: Easy To Install, Durable

CONS: Destroys Aluminum Freehub

Worth the money to change it
Changed from 11-34 to a 12-36 cassette My bike is rode just off road so the 36 tooth is killer and the added teeth on each cog is great.Mounted it on 26in wheel and turning a 2.4 mountain king.If your going to run this cassette use the freewheel hub made for it M529 or M629.I trashed my deore lx hub first ride. Now I got a M629 laced in now do that and you wont be sorry turned my cannondale hardtail into a climbing beast !!!!The hills in brown county park trails much easier to climb now

PROS: Low gears

CONS: Need hub made for it

12-36 Cassette
Installed this cassette on my 2013 Salsa Mukluk fatbike with a Raceface 30t N/W chainring, gear range seems perfect for a fatbike in this area. I definately lost top end from the stock 2 x 9 setup, but who needs top end on a fatbike in the snow. The low range seems about perfect. If i can't climb the hill with this low gear, its faster pushing anyway.

I thought this cassette was going to be super heavy, and its definately not superlight, but its actually about 25-30 grams lighter then the stock 11-34 that came on my Mukluk 3.

AM climber!!
The description says "29er" but works great so far even on a 26" bike. I have a 2009 Giant Reign x2 with the following (1 x 9)setup: This cassette 12-36 w/32T. It's an AM setup bike but with the 12-36 rear allow me to climb next to the XC fellas. Love the quiet and simplicity of this addition..an AM setup with the ability to climb like an XC.

PROS: Easy To Install, Enhances Pedaling Efficiency, Durable, Precise Shifting

CONS: Heavy

BEST USES: Mountain Biking, Road Biking

Perfect 29'er Cassette
I paired this Cassette with a 38t single chainring up front. I get that great climbing power still and I get alot more speed when I get down in the high gears. The combination of the 38t and the larger cassette give me the best of both worlds with not only climbing ability but the ability to fly on downhill and flat sections.

Buying this again in 1600 miles
I bought this to add a lower gear for my SC Tallboy 29'r Carbon. It really works great! Whether I'm climbing coit road in Henry Coe or Gordon Mill in Skeggs, it definately gets the job done!

PROS: Extra gear 36 tooth, Shimano quality, Great price

CONS: It doesn't last forever

It was easy to...
It was easy to replace the 11-34T with this one, but the 11t sprocket can't be switched with the 12t. I was surprised with the helping hand it gave on the hills, on a 9 speed rig. Going to change it to 30t x 11-36t ratio's for getting around this hilly city. Besides I'm 53yr old and 250lbs. It's bolted to a 26" wheel, the hub has not exploded yet.

I replaced an 11-32...
I replaced an 11-32 with this 12-36 cassette in conjunction with a 22/32/44 crank to give me a super low ratio for climbing steep forest roads while touring fully loaded. I don't think there is a hill I can't climb now. If the hub stays together, I'm a happy camper!

Shimano cassette upgrade
I wanted a 2nd pair of wheels for my 29er,one for street ,one for trail. My original 34t cassette was not very fast/efficient for street. The new 36t is a noticeable improvement on the 1st ride.It is sometimes slow to shift into top gear but am sure it can be adjusted. It's also very quiet. The Mavic blem rims are also very nice. The Magura brake discs seem very rugged and have more grip than the original Tektro discs.I'me keeping ALL of the items!
