I used one of these cranksets on a tour last year, rode over 6000 km on it with a fully loaded bike weighing in at around 90lb most of the time, rode lots of rough offroad stuff and some singletrack as well. this thing held up perfectly, rings are still straight and good and the teeth look like they could hold up to another 6000 km without a problem!
I couldn't think of a reason to spend any more than this on a crank that may or may not preform as well as this one, I rode it from Mexico to Colombia would trust it to go all the way around the world if I had time to! wouldn't think twice about putting one on any of my regular mtn bikes either.

Ripped off - The pressed - in spider/crankarm interface is already failing after 3 months, causing an increasingly loud click w/every pedal stroke. (The crankarm is not supposed to move independently from the spider) Although it would probably last a couple of years, I can't stand the noise. I hate this crankset due to the noise and will replace it as soon as possible.I will NEVER buy shimano again.

I have been using this crankset for almost two years and I have had no issues at all with it. I have since converted it to a two-ring crankset with a 36-24 combo. It is strong, durable and has endured all kinds of abuse. It has been on 4 different bikes during this time. Great crankset!

If your using this website you most likely know a thing or two about bikes. That being said you should know that this is a typical Shimano product, light, durable, and preforms well. I don't think I can remember ever owning a Shimano product and being disappointed.
Good price and easy to install. Old drivetrain was getting troublesome for front shifting. New rings did not help the problem, so I decided to try this. Much better than new rings, and about the same price. No flex on cranks either, so better upgrade overall. Still struggling to get upshifts as quick as I'd like from the granny to mid chainring, but hoping I can tune this out over time.
Now if I could get a deal like this for a 2x crankset...

I purchase this a few years ago. It now sits on my second frame build, a Fuji hard tail. I liked it too much that I skip getting the XT version and stick with what I had. So far it has lasted me this long, and the chain ring wear is very minimal.
If you are on a budget I highly recommend this, unless you want less weight go for the XT version. The only thing is that a small washer from the bottom bracket broke, but I think it was due to over torque during installation.

Got this to replace an old SIS on a hard tail because of the low price. I fell in LOVE with it. It has a better feel than my FSA crank. So I moved it to my FS Gary Fisher because it rides so well. It has taken many rock strikes on the crank arms with no problems. I have bent other cranks that way.

I bought this set after my Truvativ GXP crankset broke (literally sheared the splines on the spindle). Mind you I weigh 160 lbs and ride XC so I felt that was an inexcusable failure. I contacted SRAM and they offered to "crash replace" it for 100 bucks. Rather than spend 100 with them I just bought this crankset. It came with the BB, took about 20 minutes to install. No compatibility problems with my Stumpjumper FSR. I have been riding them with no issues for about 6 months.

Put this crank on in a few minutes after cleaning my frame up. Been riding it hard for over a year. Not one problem.
This is a very functional crankset. It is almost as light as much more expensive cranksets. I like the way it secures, as it will not loosen. It shifts well, and the arms are stiff. You really don't gain anything but "show" by getting a more expensive crankset.
Good for XC, good weight, not as strong as they used to make them. Easy install, solid performance.

Got this for a steal. The included bottom bracket is light compared to the fistful of metal that was my old squaretaper spindle bottom bracket.
I like the looks, except for the black outer chainring. Silver all round would have been nicer.
Despite an old bike with ancient parts, I ride often and occasionally race. I guess I'd gotten a bit used to my older cranks and bottom bracket. This new one is much more stiff. The plus side of this is a faster more responsive stroke. The downside is my harsh aluminum bike has an even more harsh aluminum feel.
Also the 170mm cranklength is a bit on the short end of what is normal nowadays. When I first stepped on the bike, it felt more like I was on my wife's female specific bike with shorter cranks. But after a few hours I grew more accustomed. I think with a few more rides they'll feel like the new normal.
My LBS was unable to get my old front derailler to work with this. This may have been because that derailler is pretty well shot with a tremendous amount of play. But it did work with my old SLX cranks. I had already ordered (and am still waiting on) a new FD, so it didn't bother me too much. For now I'm assuming that the new FD will fix the problem (fingers crossed)
I am currently running this on an 8speed. It seems to be working (except for the aforementioned problem-- I hope the 8/9 issue isn't the cause!). Of course it should work on 9. I hope when I eventually bow to shimano and end up with 10 that it will still continue to work
