I want to get a new derailleur too. What are my options and does the freewheel require a long cage derailleur? Thanks
Thomas on Jul 27, 2016
BEST ANSWER: You are talking about how much chain slack your rear derailleur can handle - its capacity. it is measured by adding the the difference between your biggest rear sprocket and smallest, plus the difference between your chain rings.

So your choice on how wide a spread you get on your cluster/freewheel/casette added to your current chain ring difference will inform whether your need a long throw rear derailleur.

As a side note - depending on how you use your gears can effect whether you need a long throw as well. The most slack comes from using your inner chain ring with your outer rear sprocket. The most stretch - outer chain ring to inner rear sprocket Most mechanics don't advise that you use either of the extreme alignments. We like straighter alignment of the chain between the front and back to lessen wear and some chain jump issues. So most mechanics generally recommend to the general cyclist that you use the inner chain ring with the inner half of the rear sprockets (plus 1 or 2 depending on how many sprockets you have) , and the outer chain ring with the outer half of the rear sprockets (plus 1 or 2 etc). That gives you over-lapping use in the mid ranges and avoids the chain angles of the most extreme combinations - meaning a shorter chain is okay and then less chain slack to pick up. BUT it also means if you ever try to go big - big you can jam your drivetrain, you will always have enough for small-small but big-big? Expect a jarring realization that you didn't get that long throw...
