These are awesome pedals for a great price. They were very easy to set up and are a breeze to adjust. It has become second nature to clip out of these when I need to. I love the extra platform because even when im not clipped in, I have some support under my feet. They are also extremely durable. Ive hit them off of rocks and roots countless times and theyve never missed a beat. After two hard years of use the right pedal has developed some play and the left cage is a little wobbly but i never had them serviced. All they require is an occasional lube on the tension springs and clips. One very small issue that i had with these pedals is that my shoes didnt clip in properly at first becuase the rubber soles of my shoes were interfering with the tops of the cages. All it took was a little dremel work on the shoes. Overall these are awesome pedals and I would definetely buy them again.

      Work fine as an SPD...

Work fine as an SPD but Resin cages are not durable enough off road use in New England. Spend the extra $ and get the Aluminum cage SPD pedals.

      Comments about Shimano PD-M424 Pedals:

I am new to beign clipped and so far it has been a positive experience with these pedals. I can ride with normal shoes if I want to. I have ridden a technical single-track unclipped, although I did not feel 100% confident, since the plataform is not wide enough. But for cruising or non-technical rides, you would not have a problem. Would recommend this pedal to someone new to clips. Great value also.

My first set of clipless pedals they are easy to adjust and easy to get in and out of. I would definitely recommend. They aren't the top of the line pedal but your not paying a top of the line price. And nothing but good things to say about Jenson I've ordered several different times from them and always happy with the service provided.

                Comments about Shimano PD-M424 Pedals:

What I really like about these pedals is that you can adjust them so that they take very little effort to unclip from, yet still hold you in tightly while pedaling. This is crucial in emergency situations and has saved me many times. I have a different pair of entry-level Shimano pedals on another bike and at the loosest setting they take considerably more effort to unclip out of.

The plastic cage seems sturdy enough for commuting in the city. I've fallen several times while clipped in at a tighter setting and the cages haven't broken yet.

                  Comments about Shimano PD-M424 Pedals:

With the bigger platform I find it easier to clip in. And for the beginner riders,(like myself),if one doesnt get clipped in right away, the pedal is big enough to ride it out until you do.

                  Comments about Shimano PD-M424 Pedals:

I bought these for my wifes new MTB. We just started riding again after a two year hiatus. She used to use Shimano M520 pedals which she stuggled getting in and out of even with the tension screws all the way backed out. She noticed right away that the M424's are easier for her to get into and said that she liked these pedals better because even if she can't get "clipped in" right away, her feet are still fully supported by the platform. This is especially important when sarting from a complete stop at the top of a bumpy descent. The pedals are a little heavy and I question their durability, but they are perfect for a rider new to mountain biking and to clipless pedals. Oh, and they are a great price.

I haven't had these PD-M424 pedals for long but so far I'm 100% satisfied. They are much easier to get into than my previous pedals and hold your shoes firmly. And getting free of the pedals in an emergency is no problem. Believe me, I've had the opportunity to test that function! I'd by them again in a heartbeat!

                    Comments about Shimano PD-M424 Pedals:

                    Pros:

Good, quality pedals. They are durable, and have taken quite a few big rocks and other miscellany. They turn smoothly after about 2500 miles with minimal maintenance. I thoroughly enjoy the ample cage on the pedal, even when clipped in, as it reduces pressure on the ball of my foot. I have had no issues clipping in after getting used to them, and keep one side on light tension, the other on heavy.

                    Cons:
The axle seal weeps grease with temperature changes. You'll need to clean it after almost every ride. The cage gets in the way of general cleaning of the pedal without some really small brushes

                    Bottom Line:

I would highly recommend this pedal for general use. While it lacks the open design of its higher-end cousins, it is a good, affordable starting point for a clipless pedal.
