Shimano SH-M163 SPD Shoes

Shimano SH-M163 SPD Shoes

As a bona fide member of Shimano’s latest “Enduro” shoe offering, the SH-M163 is talented with plethora of new features that hone in on versatility and off-the-bike functionality.

Leading the way is Shimano’s cutting edge TORBAL (torsional balance) technology which allows some sideway flex in the back section of the sole, while maintaining stiffness in the front. What this does is improve balance and handling by setting the heel section free to accommodate lateral movement, while optimizing pedaling efficiency at the sole-to-cleat interface, impersonating the natural movement of flat pedals. Additionally, TORBAL technology features high traction rubber lugs on the outer edges to ensure excellent traction on a variety of terrain, and durable contact areas to further improve both grip and resilience.

Furthermore, after realizing that many Enduro racers tended to slam their cleats as far back as possible, Shimano gave the SH-M163 an extended channel that allows much more rearward position than previously seen.

Employing Shimano’s Cross X-Strap, the SH-M163 shoes offer a precise fit while adding comfort when exerting force back on the pedals. The repositioned attachment point of the middle strap relieves tension on the top of the foot during push-off, while the fiber glass composite polyamide mid sole offers a stiff platform for transferring power into a snappy acceleration. As Enduro and Trail riding can be anything but kind, the uppers are constructed of tough synthetic leather that holds its own and provides additional protection for your foot.

  • Tough synthetic leather upper with low-profile armor provide foot protection and excellent durability
  • Cross X-Strap is optimized for relieving tension on top of foot during push off motion
  • Super low-profile micro-adjust buckle securely holds foot
  • Single density extra-cushion insole conforms a variety of foot shapes with shock absorbing cushioning
  • Volume+ last for a more accommodating toe box
  • "TORBAL" Torsional midsole allows natural rider "flow" motion during downhill
  • Expanded SPD cleat adjustment range to accommodate race or trail minded riding styles
  • Glass fiber composite polyamide mid sole for power transfer
  • Stiff rubber pedal contact blocks optimizes stability and pedaling effectiveness
  • High durability rubber outsole
  • Best matched with PD-M785
  • Compatibility: 2-hole (SPD)
  • Weight: 728g (size 40)

Doesn't live up to the durability of its predecessor
I have some old m-162's that I purchased 5 years ago and they just won't die. I've gone through 3 other shoes since I purchased those. And said you know what I'm going back to shimano shoes since those have lasted so long and they fit my needs. I ride around 1500 miles a year with a fair amount of climbing. I have had these shoes for 6 months and the rubber and leather have delaminated off the sole of the shoe and in some spots broken. I had high hopes for the shoes they do hike-a-bike well and have a good platform for pedalling. They are a little narrower then the 162's but not to bad.

Excellent Trail Shoes!
I bought these (at 50% off - cha-ching!!) to replace my trusty old Shimano SH-M161s that were pretty worn, but still rolling along after many miles.
Compared to the 161's, these have beefier armoring along the outside and toes, they have a much more comfortable toebox, they're lighter, and easier to walk in.
The soles feel maybe a bit stiffer, and they don't have the metal spikes from previous models, but the new toe lugs grip much better on slick rocks and roots than the old metal spikes. The rubber soles are really grippy on a variety of surfaces.
Very comfortable, and the velcro and ratcheting straps allow you to dial in the fit very effectively.
You can't find a shoe this dialed-in for trail riding at this price. Hands-down my favorite MTB shoe ever.

Good fit, nice adjustability
These boots look good and have good adjustability to make them comfortable. But it takes a little while to get the uppers broken in enough to be really snug. I wish bookmakers would open up the toe box like Keen boots. Most cycling boots are tight in the toes, which is not comfortable for me.

a decent shoe
this is a comfortable shoe and functions well. However, the design of the cross strap wasn't well thought out. If you have a narrow foot and need to cinch that strap down, it may rub on the crank which is very annoying. I had to cut 1/2" off each strap.

To Narrow compared to the original Shimano shoes.
Been Wearing these since the inception. 100% satisfied with the Shimano shoes until this pair. Way too narrow, I see the offer wide shoes but I have never needed wide shoes before under any brand.

Good Value Shoe with Improvements in the Tongue Area
I had the older model of this shoe and had the tongue split very early in its life. This new shoe has a "V" groove cut into the tongue to prevent the stress that causes the split. This newer model has a slightly smaller toe box area compared to the older model. These shoes aren't light but are sturdy as can be attested by a long weekend in Utah on the rocky Guacamole Trail. The clip in easily and stay clipped on my Crank Bros pedals.

Also great for everyday wear-
Shoes wear and work great. My first clipless shoes and I'm convinced I should have bought them years ago when I started biking. Definitely helps you efficiently pedal getting the most out of each pedal stroke, up or down. These shoes fit comfortable both on the pedal and walking around/climbing stairs. I have worn them into the office and they blend well with casual work wear. Only con I have about the shoe is the rachet system. Is it replaceabale? If it breaks, these shoes are done. I need to check if it is replaceable. The velcro straps do appear durable.

I have wide feet, which I'm always concerned about when buying shoes of any kind. Any users out there with similar issue? I own Shimano SH-AM45 which are not very comfy, toes are getting numb after awhile, so I'm trying to find an alternative.
