Shimano R078 Road Shoe

Simplicity is a thing of beauty, and Shimano’s R078 road shoes serve as perfect evidence. You can say that judging by their price point the R078 shoes are “entry level,” but if you stand back and look at them again, you can see that’s simply not the case. Sure the more race-focused shoes feature a ratcheting buckle and carbon soles, but the R078 shoes offer a simple “three straps and you’re in” closure system that’s plenty secure for mid-week training or weekend club rides. Weighing a tad more than carbon fiber, the fiberglass reinforced nylon outer sole provides a sturdy platform for kicking up steep climbs, jockeying quick descents and making quick accelerations on the group rides. Additionally, SPD and SPD- SL cleat compatibility enables the R078 road shoes to be used both on the road and even in the gym, if you’re into that.

In its essence, the R078 may not be a first choice for seasoned racers, but for just about everything else, including learning how to clip-in, putting in off-season training, or commuting, the Shimano R078 shoes are an excellent option and a great case for expelling the term “entry-level” from the cycling dictionary.

Editor’s Note: One of our employees had the chance to put a pair of the R078 shoes through some strides. Be sure to click here to read the Employee Tested review in the Jenson USA Journal.

Comments about Shimano SH-R078 Road Shoe:

Shoes are comfortable while riding but hard to walk in even for short distances. Good thing they are riding shoes and not walking shoes. Very good value at this price point. I wear 10.5 in Nike runners and the 45 fit very well.

Comments about Shimano SH-R078 Road Shoe:

First time on clipless pedals/shoes, why did I wait so long!. Work great, comfortable & secure fit, light weight.. Good sizing...I wear a 12B (narrow) Asics running shoe, these were size 48 based on the sizing chart and are just right. I would say if you are a "between size" on the chart, go up...YRMV. I have a narrow foot & Velcro straps adjust for my feet, but there is definitely room/adjustment for a wide foot. Can't compare to others brands/models as this is my first clipless pair. But also can't see benefit of paying 2-3-4 times more for some other shoes at this time, but we'll have to see how these work & hold up over time.

Comments about Shimano SH-R078 Road Shoe:

Great shoe that doesn't break the bank. I prefer Velcro closure to buckles, clamps, clasps etc...Velcro always holds, I've never had it wear out, and it has infinite adjustability. It may not be fashionable with the guys who match their riding clothes, but who cares?!? It's just riding bikes.

I wanted to spend little money for indoor cycling shoes. I've used these several times a week for about a month now. They work well so far. The price was great. About half of the retail price in stores.
